Job Description

Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist- Hybrid (Tele-work and on-site)

The GIS Specialist will be a key member of AFHSD’s Integrated Bio surveillance (IB) Branch, providing vital support to the GIS team. You will contribute to developing, implementing, and overseeing advanced DoD GIS products, such as web maps, dashboards, and StoryMaps for tracking health events, disease outbreaks, and environmental hazards that could affect DoD assets worldwide. Your role will also involve staying up to date on the latest technological advancements, and driving innovation with the team to ensure we maintain our leadership in biosurveillance capabilities.

The vision of our client, the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division (AFHSD), is to be the central epidemiological resource and a global health surveillance proponent for the U.S. Armed Forces. They provide timely, relevant, actionable, and comprehensive health surveillance information to promote, maintain, and enhance the health of military and military-associated populations.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist: $85K-$100K

Pay commensurate with experience. Full time benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K and other possible benefits as provided. Benefits are subject to change with or without notice.

Work Location: Hybrid- Tele-work and On-site

Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of GIS applications (e.g., Web-maps, Dashboards, StoryMaps).
  • Automate tasks using Python libraries to improve workflow efficiency.
  • Conduct spatial analysis and modeling to facilitate decision-making processes.
  • Create talking points, tables, figures, maps, data visualizations, and slides for presentations and publications.
  • Develop maps, charts, and reports to effectively present findings to stakeholders.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned
  • Assist in coordinating responses to information requests and developing presentations for the IB team.
  • Support data analysis and visualization by collecting, analyzing, and interpreting spatial data.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot problems within applications.

Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science, or a related field (graduate-level degrees strongly preferred).
  • 2-5 years of experience supporting Federal clients, particularly DoD, is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or other object-oriented programming languages (e.g., JavaScript, HTML, CSS, C#, .NET).
  • Familiarity with ESRI software products such as ArcGIS Map, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Portal, and ArcGIS Online.
  • Command of English language, both written and verbal, enabling clear and coherent presentation of analytical results.
  • Understanding of vector and raster GIS data types.
  • Strong team player with excellent collaboration skills, capable of working well with other professionals in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to create and modify geographic data from various sources, such as text files, ensuring data accuracy and relevance.
  • Minimum of three years of experience performing GIS-related tasks.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure accuracy and quality in all GIS projects.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
  • Demonstrated capability to quickly learn new technologies, work independently, and deliver maps, application prototypes, or other deliverables within tight deadlines.
  • Must be a US citizen and able to obtain a Secret Clearance
