A Brief Overview
The Genetic Counselor Assistant (GCA) supports the genetic counselors and other team members in both project work and clinical workflows. He/she contributes to the management of diverse aspects of the service/program, including facilitation of genetic laboratory testing, the coordination of care for patients, optimization of workflows, and working collaboratively with the team to create a patient-centered and administratively effective environment. The GCA works with the administrative, clinical, and management teams to support operations, project work, and customer service. S/he provides support to all functions of the team. The GCA is a team player who works closely with others and who is flexible in dealing with the changing priorities. S/he is a self-reliant individual who synthesizes his/her knowledge of practice operations in order to problem-solve, prioritize, and facilitate complex transactions in the course of his/her daily activities.

What you will do
- Coordinate and communicate with clinical teams, patients and relatives. For example, as needed, assist in appointment coordination, referrals and/or scheduling, call patients for intakes and pedigrees ahead of clinic visit, assist with obtaining or scanning medical records, monitor and respond to patient phone line/emails or similar.
- Assist with optimization of clinic and operational workflows and metric tracking.
- Working collaboratively with the team to create a patient-centered and administratively effective environment.
- Manage clinic/genetic testing supplies including genetic testing kits, requisitions forms, other clinical forms.
- Serve as a liaison with genetic testing laboratories regarding genetic test orders, results, authorizations, records, sample shipping; fill out requisitions
- Assist with accessioning or coordinating patient samples in the laboratory.
- Assist genetic counselors in drafting and/or dissemination of post-counseling documentation to patients and clinicians, such as patient family letters or letters of medical necessity.
- Maintain clinical databases.
- Organization of peer-to-peer reviews to appeal insurance denials.
- Genetic/genomic literature searches.
- Assist in the collection of variant information data, coverage metrics or other relevant data to support genetic test interpretation and/or report writing.
- Participate in project activities and process improvement efforts, participate in relevant team meetings, organize project meetings and agendas.
- Assist with collection and management of family history information; input pedigrees into Progeny.
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or ongoing course work in biological/health science, preferably with focus on genetics from an accredited college or university.
Experience Qualifications
- Experience as a research coordinator or assistant.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in Genetics and able to demonstrate knowledge of genetic terminology and concepts.
- Experience in customer service.
- Experience working with customers or the public on the phone.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication (both verbal and written) skills.
- Experience with EPIC electronic medical record application.
- Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to solve problems and identify solutions.
- Moderate to advanced computer skills required.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including communicating clearly and sensitively with patients, families, referring clinicians, and research colleagues.
- Ability to adapt to an ever-changing, fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job demonstrating culturally competent and age-specific communication.
- Ability to apply C-I-CARE philosophies and demonstrate customer service skills in interactions with all patients, families, and staff, including during high volume times and stressful interactions.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, e.g. protected health information (PHI).
- Ability to analyze information and situations, prioritize tasks, develop solutions and make recommendations.
- Ability to use good judgment and work independently, and in a team setting.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $34.80 - $39.20 per hourThe salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
