Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. About The Position


The General Maintenance Worker performs unskilled and skilled labor in construction and maintenance activities on District flood control structures, committed to minimalizing environmental impacts while enhancing the quality of life for residents living near them. In addition to providing flood protection, the Flood Control District offers attractive, multi-use amenities that blend with the desert surroundings, including hiking trails, bike pathways, and open space to be enjoyed by the residents of Maricopa County.

We Require


  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of general maintenance work experience


We Also Value


  • Knowledge of landscape and roadway maintenance and repair methods and materials
  • Experience working in the public sector
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions, and First Aid
  • Ability to use a personal computer
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in truck and equipment operations
  • Skill to safely and efficiently operate and maintain trucks and equipment in accordance with standard operating and safety procedures
  • Three or more years of general maintenance experience


Job Contributions


  • Perform manual labor assignments in the building and maintenance and repair of roadways and Flood Control structures; maintain landscaping and clears brush and debris from roadways, structures, and facilities
  • Load and unload materials, supplies, and equipment and delivers to job sites as directed
  • Perform traffic control activities as needed; report safety hazards; perform tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies
  • Operate a variety of trucks, equipment, and hand tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures


Working Conditions


  • The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties & responsibilities the employee maybe exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain valid Arizona driver’s license by the time of hire
  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards and noise and vibration
  • Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly
  • Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor, ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel


Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware


  • The position generally conducts business out in the field utilizing various hand tools for numerous construction and maintenance duties, including shovels, rakes, pickaxes, brooms, and varying-sized electric and hand tools. Familiarization with four-wheel drive capabilities and self-recovery winching techniques will be needed occasionally


Protective Equipment Required


  • Fieldwork will often be conducted in remote locations under potentially extreme weather environments. Attire for the position will be provided and maintained by Maricopa County and has the potential for General Construction and/or Field Inspection PPE required to perform duties daily. This includes but is not limited to safety-toe footwear, hard hats, high visibility vests, eye protection, durable pants such as jeans
