Description
In collaboration with the Motion Capture and Gait Lab Program Manager, physical therapists, kinesiologist, orthopedic surgeon and other members of the sports medicine center team in direct and indirect clinical movement laboratory operations, the Biomechanical Engineer provides engineering and technical support to the motion capture and gait laboratory, primarily related to clinical motion capture and physiologic measurement. This includes operating and troubleshooting specialized laboratory equipment, patient marker placement, development of analysis codes and pipelines, data processing, and report generation using Motion Capture software, MATLAB, Visual3D, MS office applications and EMR software, as well additional support to the lab as needs and offerings develop. Additionally, performs quality control, troubleshoot and formally document quality checking of all motion and physiologic data collection equipment/procedures, for all clinical and research studies in direct collaboration with the lab program manager. This includes quality testing, validation studies and calibration of equipment, maintenance and assistance with service contracts, validating new models, running consistency and validation studies when necessary as well as expansion of lab normal database.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree in a related field preferably Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Kinesiology (Biomechanics), or Movement Science (Required) Or
Master's Degree (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
2 years experience in motion capture, movement science, and/or in a clinical gait analysis laboratory is required. (Required) Or

Required Skills/Knowledge
Research experience in a motion capture or gait lab is highly desired.
Interest in pediatric and adolescent gait lab programming and sports specific motion analysis assessments.
Ability and desire to work as an integral member of a multidisciplinary health-care team, as well as interact with clinical subjects undergoing motion analysis.
Interest in providing engineering support for clinical operations and research related data collection/analysis.
Proficiency in analytical and programming languages related to movement analysis, including motion capture and gait equipment software, MATLAB, Visual3D, statistical analysis, and the MS office applications.

Functional Accountabilities
Professional Practice
  • Ensures quality collection, processing, archival and retrieval of data while providing various support to the patients, families, and staff.
  • Explains procedures to the patient and families.
  • Collects electromyographic, kinetic, kinematic, and foot pressure data
  • Assists in organization of care around each patient's diagnosis which may require a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Reduce delays by ensuring equipment is ready for each phase of the testing process.
  • Processes the patient data in a timely manner.
  • Assists in performing initial interpretation of patient data; reviews patient data with program manager, physicians and motion capture and gait analysis team members to determine treatment recommendations. Preparation of final report incorporating information from all sources.
  • Assists with research projects. Compiles research data and reports results to contribute to conference abstracts, podium and poster presentations, and/or scientific journal submissions.
  • Troubleshoots computer and equipment problems and patient data for errors in collection and processing prior to review of data. Arranges for repairs when necessary. Confers with lab program manager regarding equipment or data problems when necessary.
  • Maintains the storage of patient and clinical data.
Training
  • As new technology avails itself, coordinate necessary training with clinicians to assure best utilization of equipment is in place.
  • Aid in providing consultation and training to clinical staff in the area of medical equipment application, usage and areas in which alternative applications are possible to improve care.
  • Work with vendor to provide advanced technical expertise to biomedical engineering department in the area of equipment operation, repair, design, and application.

  • Act as a member of the internal sports medicine center's emergency response team.
  • Updates and develops software as needed to improve data processing.
