General Function


Under the direction of the building principal, the School Counselor - Elementary plans and provides appropriate services for students; provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of all students; and monitors and evaluates student outcomes. They collaborate with teachers, administrators, district psychologists, licensed social workers, school nurses, parents, and community groups to promote the success of each student; develops, selects and modifies guidance lessons and materials to meet the needs of all students, and supports the school PBIS and SEL Programs. They meet with students individually, in small groups, or in classroom sessions. School Counselors - Elementary will also help students transition from elementary to secondary schools.

Summary And Overall Objective


The purpose of the School Counselor in the school setting is to promote and enhance the learning process of every student, and, assist all students academically, socially, emotionally and behaviorally by providing activities to help them become successful global citizens.


Essential Functions Duties And Responsibilities


  • *Is responsible for understanding and adhering to laws, District policies, and procedures *
  • *Review school data periodically to ensure that the school counseling program is meeting the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students *
  • *Counsel students individually and in small groups *
  • *Assist in the identification of students with special needs *
  • *Refer students to appropriate school personnel and community agencies *
  • *Use available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program such as websites, interest surveys, career explorations, and links to community resources *
  • *Work with the administration to create, coordinate, and implement student orientation programs for incoming students *
  • *Supports the school PBIS and SEL Programs *
  • *Serve as a resource for school personnel and parents. *
  • *Implement an effective referral and follow up process *
  • *Assist students in conflict resolution *
  • *Submit monthly time and task reports electronically as requested *
  • *Manage crises as a member of the school PBIS and behavior team *
  • Conduct parent education classes as needed
  • *Predictable and reliable attendance *
  • *Follow required procedures and practices *
  • Initiate student programs
  • *Encourage teacher/parent communication and community involvement *
  • *Interpret student records *
  • *Participate in any required district, child services, 504, or other related meetings *
  • *Prepare reports, records, lists, and all other required information and data *
  • *Participate in professional development activities that relate to counseling and related school programs *
  • Maintain a variety of files/records and departmental library of supplementary and reference materials
  • *Discuss the school counseling program and action plans with the school administrator *
  • Provide services to students in the areas of academic, personal/social, and career development as needed
  • *Provide leadership and collaborate with other educators in the school-wide integration of USBE's School Counseling Program model *
  • *Join and participate in appropriate professional organizations and continue to further their academic involvement *
  • *Collaborate with the school\'s social worker to determine best placement for a student\'s case file as needed. *

During times of state or district emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities. e.g. Performs general cleaning and sanitizing of work areas, provides remote assistance to students and staff, and any other reasonable duty as needed.


Teachers are expected to dress in good taste and be well groomed, befitting to members of a respected profession. Cleanliness of self and attire, neatness, and attractive grooming are stressed and expected. Teachers should always dress in a manner that professionally sets them apart from students. Exceptions to the dress limitations are school approved special events or activities.

  • *Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. *
