ICA is seeking a US citizen Instructor to teach a synchronous/asynchronous French to English Verbatim Translation Workshop for Government linguists.
The instructor must be a U.S. citizen.
Job description:
The workshop will meet weekly for class time where the instructor will present teaching points for the week and the new weekly assignment. The instructor will be accessible using the workshops chat and forum features in ICA Learn, through email, and during office hours hosted on Wednesdays.
- Period of Performance: 09/11/23 – 10/20/23 (6 weeks)
- Weekly class hours: Mondays, 11-1 pm EST
- Rate: $40.00
- Teaching platform: MS Teams
- Students’ language background: intermediate
- Student engagement and homework review: up to 2 hours per student per week (scheduled with students directly in individual and group feedback sessions)
- Curricula and materials development hours: 30 hours
- Workshop total hours: up to 150 hours
- Number of students: 10 students
- Students’ homework assignment: 4 hours per week
The aim of a Verbatim Translation Workshop is to prepare linguists to meet their customers’ needs by providing translation that maintain the author’s intention and register when translating a document.
Training shall focus not on standardizing terminology, but rather on improving congruity judgment, use of grammar, and expression as well as maintaining the meaning of the original text. This is not a word for word translation, instead, emphasis is placed on translating meaning for meaning and the improvement of writing skills. Content and activities are to focus on the development of the skills required to perform verbatim translation at the intermediate level.
The curricula is to include a statement of training goals, description of homework to be assigned, and a description of pre- and post-training assessments. The goal of this training is to prepare linguists to work at ILR Level 2+ or 3.
Required qualifications:
- Native or near native skills in the French and English language
- Experience teaching verbatim translation (producing English summaries from French source material)
- Translation work experience
- Understanding of ILR scale
- Experience teaching foreign language to adults in a group class setting

Required technology skills:
- Experience working with MS Teams (or comparable platform) uploading files, presenting, screensharing etc.
- Experience working with Moodle (or other) LMS
A Verbatim Translation Course Instructor should be able to:
- Feel comfortable teaching in both English and French language
- Teach linguists how to translate maintaining the author’s intensions and register from French to English
- Feel comfortable teaching heritage speakers
