It is the primary responsibility of this position to respond to inquiries from the Spanish speaking public, both by phone and in writing. The position provides interpreter services as needed to the Consumer Protection specialists, investigators and attorneys in connection with complaint mediation. investigations, and litigation.

Position is also responsible for English/Spanish and Spanish/English translation of written correspondence and other documents received or generated by the Division.

Additionally, the position provides telephone and receptionist services (in English) for the Consumer Protection Division and back up clerical assistance on special projects as required by the Division.

STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO THE RECRUITMENT RANGE OF $49,158 to $52,000. Salary determination is based on education, experience, departmental budget, and equity considerations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Ability to provide accurate Spanish interpretation of verbal communications and accurate Spanish translations of written materials.
Ability to communicate effectively with the Spanish or English-speaking public over the
telephone and in person.
Ability to develop basic understanding North Carolina law and related consumer protection statutes.
Ability to deal effectively with impatient or upset consumers and handle a large volume of calls.
Ability to answer inquiries with assistance of other Public Information Assistants and to access a variety of resources in acquiring information.
Position requires basic computer skills in order to access and research Consumer Protection database.
Position requires the ability to a handle large volume on incoming telephone calls from Spanish-speakers and others and the ability to effectively deal with distressed consumers. In addition, the position requires the ability use a computerized Consumer Protection database to locate and determine the status of complaints on specific companies.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in interpreting and translating English and the required foreign language in a setting that requires a knowledge of the programs or service;

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS) if you are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.
