Retirement - CalPERS Miscellaneous retirement: Classic employee 3% @ 60, PEPRA employee 2% @ 62

Health Benefits - CalPERS health insurance offering variety of HMO's and PPO's. District contributes 92% of the health plan premium and the employee is responsible for the remaining 8% of the premium for the whole family up to $3053.70 per month. Dental and vision insurance are also paid by the District.

Life Insurance - $20,000 for the first probationary year and $100,000 thereafter.

Under general supervision, test, diagnose, and locate malfunctions; repair and overhaul gasoline or diesel powered fire apparatus and heavy equipment; read and evaluate written comments of equipment failure; diagnose and recommend repair processes; conduct one-on-one vehicle mechanical training for District personnel on equipment and component systems; enforce shop safety rules; drive District equipment; is subject to call back; perform other duties as required.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

This job description is intended to convey information essential to understanding the scope of the position; it is not intended to be an exhaustive list of skills, efforts, duties, responsibilities or working conditions associated with the position.

• Perform comprehensive diagnoses and repair of vehicle mechanical problems of auxiliary engine equipment and power units including pumps, valves, plumbing, air compressors, and engines.
• Evaluate and repair air and hydraulic brake systems and related components. Troubleshoot and repair automotive electrical systems; install and wire new components and associated equipment; service and repair vehicle air conditioning systems; test drive repaired vehicles and insure equipment is in proper working order.
• Perform periodic tests on pumpers, elevated platforms, and aerial ladders; perform maintenance and service of equipment.
• Perform daily shop housekeeping and maintenance activities.
• Diagnose unique shop/vehicle needs and fabricate equipment parts using acetylene and arc welding tools and equipment.
• Safely operate power and various hand tools, and vehicle mechanical equipment.
• Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Inspect, diagnose, and repair vehicle mechanical problems of gasoline and diesel powered equipment; dismantle, rebuild, replace, and adjust engines, brakes, transmissions, drive-lines, and parts of electrical, fuel, exhaust, cooling, suspension, and equipment hydraulic systems using power and hand tools; tune gasoline and diesel engines to insure proper operating order.
• Read manuals and service bulletins, and maintain currency with engine repair technology.
• Respond to emergency calls to repair fire apparatus and heavy equipment at fire and other emergency locations, outlying stations, and roadside breakdown locations.
• Perform after hour, weekend, and holiday shop duties as scheduled.
• Keep accurate records of repairs and service, and parts used; requisition parts and supplies; work one-on-one with shop personnel training in truck check procedures and maintenance activities; train in advanced diagnoses and repair procedures.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check and a physical to include a drug screen.

The education or experience requirements may be modified or waived at the sole discretion of the Fire Chief. At least one of the education or experience requirements must be met; both requirements cannot be modified or waived. The Sacramento Metro Fire District Board of Directors shall be notified of any such modifications or waivers.

Age

Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

Education

Education must be obtained through a post secondary institution currently accredited by any accreditation body recognized by either the Counsel for higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education. The education requirements may be modified at the sole discretion of the Fire Chief.

Required

• Three (3) years of experience that relates to the knowledge and ability requirements listed below.
• Posses a high school diploma or equivalent GED certificate.

Desirable

• California Fire Vehicle Mechanic or Emergency Vehicle Technician, Level I certification or greater.
• Certificate of satisfactory completion or graduation from an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) accredited Technical Institute in the field of vehicle maintenance.
• Possession of CDL passenger endorsement.
• Bilingual ability.

• Must obtain Bulk Cargo Tanks and Hazmat endorsement within six (6) months of employment.
• A valid Class A California Diver's License must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. Once obtained, possession of and ability to maintain a current valid Class A California Driver's License is a condition of employment.
• Possession of and ability to maintain a current valid California Driver's License, Class C, is a condition of employment.
