Fire Dispatch Assistant - Shift

Position Information
Shift Pay: 7.5% additional pay for A.M. shift work; 5% additional pay for P.M. shift work. Applicants must be willing to work any shift of a 24-hour period and any 5 of 7 days. Applicants must be willing to work in any outlying county area, as assigned.

Examinations
Written Exam (Weight 100%) Will be conducted for the purpose of assessing the applicant's knowledge of basic principles and techniques of communications equipment and computer terminal operations; good customer service and/or public relations practices; proper telephone and radio technique and etiquette; basic geography of Kern County; basic computer systems, related technology and software, and other relevant topics.
Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
Minimum Qualifications

• Applicants must attach a copy of their typing or keyboard certificate, issued within the last two years, verifying a speed of 35 net words per minute, to their application. Certificates must conform to testing standards adopted by the Civil Service Commission. Typing certificate information may be found here.
• Minimum typing proficiency of 35 net words per minute.
• High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent or any combination of experience, education and/or training, which demonstrates possession of requisite knowledge, skills and abilities listed below.

Knowledge of: basic principles and techniques of communications equipment and computer terminal operations; good customer service and/or public relations practices; proper telephone and radio technique and etiquette; basic geography of Kern County; basic computer systems, related technology and software.
Ability to: communicate effectively over the telephone and radio; obtain information, determine priorities, and exercise good judgement in stressful situations; input data and utilize a computer aided dispatch system; spell correctly and write legibly; comprehend written and oral instructions; keep records, and work effectively with persons of varying socio-economic backgrounds in emergency and non-emergency situations and in challenging.
