JOB TITLE:
Fashion Design Teacher

LOCATION: Benton Harbor High School

SUPERVISOR: Building Principal


JOB SUMMARY:

The Fashion Design course focuses on the major aspects of the fashion industry and prepares students for careers and/or postsecondary education in this rapidly growing field. This course is designed to provide students with the foundational understanding of how to become a fashion designer, merchandiser, or stylist. Students will learn the basic elements of fashion design sketches and start to develop their own designs by understanding, analyzing, and drawing their own fashion figure.

The instructor will prepare students to:

  • Understand how the history of social, cultural, political, economic, and technological changes influence fashion
  • Apply the elements and principles of design in various aspects of the fashion industry
  • Understand the principles and techniques used in fashion design and product development and manufacturing
  • Understand various aspects of the fashion design, manufacturing, merchandising, and retail industry and the industry’s role in local, state, national, and global economies
  • Understand the characteristics, production, and maintenance of textiles and the use of sustainable practices


QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least three (3) years of work experience in the technical skills, trade, or vocations to be taught are required.
  • Skills appropriate to the fashion field are required
  • Skills to instruct students in assigned area of career technical training and career development
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field desirable.


PREFERRED EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certification
  • Master’s Degree


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Fashion Design Teacher is primarily responsible for:

  • Establish and maintain approved and effective discipline and order in a classroom or work site environment
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships in the performance of required duties
  • Establish appropriate learning goals and objectives as well as effective lesson plans
  • Participate actively in advisory committee meetings
  • Ability to demonstrate and teach fashion
  • Assist in recruitment of students
  • Establish criteria and evaluate students’ progress
  • Guide and advise students regarding assigned technical area(s)
  • Develop and maintain a variety of administrative records; attendance, grades, and student records

TERMS OF EMPLOYEMENT:

Salary based on education and experience pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining agreement, if applicable.


FUNDING SOURCE:

If this position is funded using Title dollars, federal regulations do not allow a promise of employment beyond the current year of allocated funds. If this position is funded using state program dollars, the district is not obligated to fund the position beyond the current year’s allocation. This position, at any time, may be dissolved based on funding availability and data collected from a comprehensive needs assessment.
