Job Description
Position Summary

Perform a variety of duties involved in the planning, care, and maintenance of the Biological Park farm grounds, farm animals, and crops; perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
High school diploma or GED; and
Three (3) years animal care or farm maintenance experience in a zoo, garden, farm or other agricultural facility.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a New Mexico Public Applicator License Categories 1A, 1B and 7B within six (6) months from date of hire.

  • Care, operation, and maintenance of a variety of power tools and equipment
  • Techniques of plant and garden care
  • Basic principles and practices of grounds maintenance
  • Basic principles and practices and techniques of animal handling and care
  • Basic principles and practices of irrigation system installation, maintenance, and repair
  • Basic principles of preparing adequate animal diets
  • Proper watering techniques as applied to individual plant life
  • Safe work practices
  • Specialized techniques of plant, tree and garden care
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Principles of plant taxonomy and classification
  • Methods and techniques of plant maintenance including the pruning and trimming of a variety of shrubs

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Identify plant diseases and recommend treatment and care
  • Operate a variety of equipment and power tools in a safe and effective manner
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Clean and maintain assigned animal enclosures according to established guidelines
  • Work with a variety of domestic animals
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Correctly use and apply a variety of animal handling skills
  • Install, maintain and repair irrigation systems
