The Montana State Hospital (MSH) provides inpatient psychiatric treatment to people admitted from communities across the state. MSH also provides residential services under a mental health center license on campus and at off campus locations. Admission and discharge process are governed by Montana law. Nearly all admissions are involuntarily committed under either civil or criminal procedures. The hospital employs a full range of treatment and support staff including physicians, psychologists, nurses, social workers, addiction counselors, rehabilitation therapists, paraprofessionals, health information professionals, accountants, laundry workers, dietary workers, and maintenance staff.

This position serves as the Administrator for the MSH and is responsible for the overall strategic direction of the facility to include quality of care, staff development, financial performance, business development and continuous performance improvement. This position will be an innovative, visionary leader who has the personality, self-awareness, commitment to diversity, and ability to communicate with people from various social and economic backgrounds in a clear, concise and confident manner.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing leadership and direction in planning and developing hospital programs, medical and professional staff, and facilities; overseeing the ongoing administration of medical, nursing, quality improvement, business and support services, human resources, and health information management services and operations; and performing a variety of other duties as necessary to advance the goals and objectives of the hospital and the department.

This position may be eligible for partial telework within the state of Montana. Specific conditions will be provided by the supervisor and must adhere to state policy.

What you can offer us

  • Meet minimum qualifications:
    • Master’s Degree in Public Administration; Human Services; Business; or another Health Care related field.
    • Five years of professional experience in hospital or facility administration.
    • Five years of supervisory experience managing professional staff.
    • Other combinations of related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Master’s Degree in Public Administration; Human Services; Business; or another Health Care related field.
  • Knowledge of contract administration, quality control practices, and public relations.
  • Knowledge of hospital administration and physician recruitment.
  • Five years of supervisory experience managing professional staff.
  • Knowledge of national and state certification, accreditation, regulatory standards and licensure for mental health facilities and hospitals.
  • Ability to direct and coordinate the financial and budget activities to fund operations and increase efficiency.
  • Five years of professional experience in hospital or facility administration.
  • Other combinations of related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Knowledge of forensic security protocols.
  • Ability to motivate staff and provide effective leadership.
