Position overview:

The Facilities & Operations (F&O) Division at SLAC is dedicated to the stewardship of the laboratory’s conventional facilities infrastructure. We are seeking a highly qualified manager to provide leadership and direction of our Facilities Management and Planning (FMP) organization. The position will manage staff, including supervisors/managers who provide facilities leadership and customer service for a campus of 150 buildings (1.6 million square feet) and complex utility systems (electrical, mechanical, potable and process water, sewer, and controls systems) supporting accelerator operations and research laboratories in addition to office space and industrial facilities.

Reporting to the Director of the Facilities & Operations Division, the position manages a wide spectrum of staff who work in two primary areas: Asset Management and Facilities Management. In Asset Management, you will oversee and coordinate strategic planning for the campus, manage condition assessments and prioritization lists, and plan and program major laboratory investments. In Facilities Management, you will oversee our service center teams tasked with managing service calls, service contracts (janitorial, landscaping, etc.), space assignments, office moves, and supporting our computerized maintenance management system. This position is expected to collaborate with SLAC directorates and senior management, Project Managers, scientists, service contractors, procurement staff, financial analysts, technicians, and other professionals.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop and review policies and procedures; interpret and manage policies and procedures for assigned area.
  • Define and lead local facilities activities, (or lead delegated activities in a larger unit), plan and direct department activities, and hold managers accountable for meeting established goals.
  • Manage current year maintenance and operating budgets, provide input to support the formulation of future year budgets and programs. Develop, monitor, and analyze budgets and staffing levels within FMP.
  • Define activities of assigned groups, assess staffing needs, commit resources, evaluate performance, and develop staff.
  • Clarify and resolve complex problems spanning multiple areas or technical fields; develop or oversee program implementation within assigned area. Implement and oversee facility condition assessment programs. Collaborate with Design and Construction Services (DCS) to induct projects and act as client or customer.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with scientific program leadership, ensuring short-term and long-term space assignment, infrastructure, and service requirements are aligned with the scientific directorates’ goals, plans, and projects.
  • Lead the laboratory’s Building and Space Management program, space utilization policy, administration of facility service contracts.
  • Represent SLAC in a wide variety of activities involving the DOE, Stanford University, and other DOE-sponsored Laboratories, and chairs and/or participates on committees and working groups to address Laboratory-wide issues.
  • Lead strategic planning; multiyear project prioritization, planning, and funding, and strategic condition assessment programs. Develop strategic plans for maintenance programs, and oversee implementation; consult on space inventory and allocation for assigned area(s); research and recommend division policies and strategies; identify long-range facility project/program needs.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.
  • Manage real estate, facilities, and assigned conventional infrastructure.
  • Oversee facilities managers and/or technical professionals responsible for a comprehensive, multi-faceted facility.
  • Lead and oversee the triage, prioritization, and operational plan for the full spectrum of service outlets provided by F&O.
  • Participate in annual and multiyear project prioritization, planning, and funding; lead department/unit strategic management; may lead planning in some areas or segments; develop and review recommendations regarding short-term and long-range programs and projects, long-range financial and programmatic planning and development.
  • Lead the operations of the service desk, work order management system, and management of the division’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Provide oversight of the official laboratory repositories for asset and facilities management via the Facilities Information Management System (FIMS), geographic information system (GIS), and other authoritative, centralized databases.
  • Research and recommend new initiatives and technology to improve service, enhance revenue, and realize system wide opportunities.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience as a senior manager with responsibility for developing and mentoring managers and senior professionals.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large facility organizations, or experience in managing a large professional service organization.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or other appropriate technical area, or an equivalent combination of technical education, training, and experience. Ten years of related, progressively responsible experience requiring extensive leadership and strategic expertise in facilities operations, maintenance, and planning, performing duties similar to those listed above.
  • Advanced knowledge and application of relevant codes, regulations, and processes.

Certificates and Licenses:

Professional licenses and certification in the following facilities management and technical areas is strongly preferred:

  • Certified Educational Facilities Professional
  • American Institute of Certified Planners
  • Certified Public Works Professional
  • Registered Architect (RA) or Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Certified Facilities Manager

The expected pay range for this position is $190,000 to $252,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
