Job Description

Job Purpose
Responsible for assisting in the installation and de-installation of traveling and in-house exhibits. Works with other Exhibit Department team members to support general goals established by the Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interact and communicate with the Museum’s staff, clients and vendors in a professional manner at all times to ensure good internal and external relations.
  • Check for safety hazards in the galleries and coordinate their mitigation. Comply with all safety rules and regulations and establishes safe work practices. Read all safety material received. Report unsafe conditions, unsafe acts, and accidents directly to supervisor.
  • Assist in the installation and takedown of traveling exhibits including installing AV / multimedia, lighting, picture hanging, wall prep, painting, moving, fastening, rigging, wiring, and other duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Experience in audiovisual work, including setup and troubleshooting is beneficial
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools, painting equipment, and other common maintenance / building supplies

  • Ability to determine materials and tools needed for specific jobs
  • Skilled in estimating time and costs for tasks at hand
  • Ability to work under time constraints to complete tasks by required dates
  • Good problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a team context
  • Licensed to operate material handling equipment, such as a boom lift or forklift, is preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electronics, mechanics, computers and/or carpentry
  • Good attendance
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and read/comprehend manuals
  • Well-organized
  • Detail-oriented
  • Flexibility in schedule to meet deadlines

Working Conditions
Applicant must reside in the state of Hawai’i. Working conditions will require moving exhibit elements from shipping containers into exhibit halls so inclement weather may be experienced. Installation and deinstallations are made in coordination with loaning institutions and their staff with varying requirements. Job requires the use or exposure to possibly dangerous items, such as power tools, paints and solvents, cutting devices, and heavy equipment. Time frames are sometimes short so breaks may be infrequent or irregular.

Physical Requirements
The physical requirements of the job can be demanding. Employee may be required to stand for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects on a regular basis, do repetitive tasks with few breaks, and so forth.
