A Medical Exercise Specialist is a medical fitness professional who not only works with the typical client looking to improve their health and fitness level; but also has the knowledge and skills to work with clients with a wide range of medical conditions. These atypical clients are “medical exercise or post rehab” in that they are referred to a fitness professional after completion of a rehabilitation program and now need a fitness program tailored to their particular medical condition. Responsibilities
- Perform safe and effective fitness assessments on clients with medical disorders without causing exacerbation of the condition.
- Communicate effectively with medical professionals and insurance carriers.
- Understand the role and scope of practice for the medical exercise professional when working with post rehab and medical exercise clients.
- Perform a functional assessment on the post rehab client to determine the client’s functional abilities as a means of evaluating the effectiveness of the post rehab program
- Document both assessment and training sessions using standardized medical exercise administrative forms and methods.
- Develop safe and effective conditioning programs for clients with musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
- Work with clients individually or in small groups.
- Perform a 12-point musculoskeletal screening on a medical exercise/post rehab client.
- Develop an effective marketing program to establish relationships with medical professionals in the local community.
- Spend your time interacting with clients and training them in the gym, their home, or office.
- Apply safe and effective medical exercise techniques for the upper and lower extremity and spine.
- Understand the related anatomy, pathology and biomechanics of common medical conditions.
- Understand how common medical conditions respond to exercise.
- Identify the red flags and warning signs that indicate the client is in need of evaluation or treatment from a licensed medical professional.
- Work in a gym, business, or clients home.
Qualifications
Meet with clients before working with them to gain a better understanding of the client's goal. Give clients a tour of the facility and show them some of the workouts they may do with particular equipment. These plans typically include cardiovascular and weight lifting exercises. During a training session, trainers observe their clients performing exercises to ensure they are doing the moves correctly. Also give diet and lifestyle suggestions when they are relevant to the fitness plan.
Degree Level High school diploma or equivalent; CPR certification, MES Certification
Experience 1-2 years in working with clients or interning
Key Skills Interpersonal and communication skills; physically fit; patience
