Department Information


Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.

Job Summary

  • Requests and makes available supplies and materials related to the collection of evidence and property management.
  • Maintains all records associated with evidence management.
  • Provides support and backup as needed for the front desk and other duties as needed.
  • Provides testimony referencing work being performed during court proceedings as needed.
  • Manages the department's image software systems; Examines, processes, and provides redaction and duplication in accordance with the department's and university's procedures and policies.
  • Manages and executes the department's personal property procedure including receiving, processing, contacting rightful owners, and disposing of unclaimed personal property.
  • Manages the storage of all evidence collected by the department and maintains the evidentiary chain of custody.
  • Checks out and releases evidence to appropriate persons and secures upon return.

Qualifications


EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years of administration support or related experience.

Preferred

  • 1 year of prior law enforcement experience.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.

Working Conditions / Demands


The role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the working environment; handle or operate objects, controls, or tools; ascend/descend ladders or stairs; position self to move at lower levels; and discern scents. The role requires the ability to lift and/or move more than 165 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and detect how far away an object is. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
