Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Materials Science Division has an opening for a EUV Resist Characterization Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team at the Center for X-ray Optics.
In this exciting role, you will employ spectroscopy characterization techniques to study the role and impact of electrons on pattern generation in photoresists upon exposure to Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) radiation. The focus of the experimental research will be on the fundamental understanding of EUV- and/or electron-induced chemical processes in resist materials. This will be performed primarily by studying electron generation and transport in resist films using X-ray/EUV electron spectroscopies (photoelectron spectroscopy, total electron yield) at the Advanced Light Source (ALS).
What You Will Do:
- Utilize and advance experimental techniques, for example, synchrotron-based or lab-based characterization tools to probe EUV- and/or electron-induced chemical changes in resist materials.
- Conduct research using a suite of synchrotron-based experimental techniques to characterize EUV absorption, electron yield, energies, and attenuation length in EUV resists.
- Publish original research in peer-reviewed journals; contribute to scientific publications; present research through talks and posters at conferences, workshops, and multi-investigator meetings.
- Collaborate and work in teams of scientists from diverse backgrounds and play a key role in merging efforts that span chemistry, materials, characterization, and theory.
- Uphold a culture of safety and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Participate in weekly and biweekly meetings and seminars.
What is Required:
- Creative and independent problem solver with a track record of tackling research projects from initiation to meaningful conclusion.
- Good motivation to work in a team with people from various background and research topics effectively
- Demonstrated knowledge or expertise in light–matter and electron–matter interactions, e.g., photochemistry or ionizing radiation.
- Experience in X-ray characterization techniques.
- Proven ability to publish research in scientific/technical journals supported by a strong publication record.
- Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, materials science, chemical engineering, polymer science, or a related field.
- Background in measurements of photo- or electron-induced chemical transformations.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience working with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chambers
- Experience in solution-phase processing (e.g. spin-coating) and characterization (visual microscope, ellipsometer, AFM, etc.) of thin films.
- Strong background in X-ray characterization techniques.
For Consideration, please apply by August 31, 2023 with the following application materials:
- Cover Letter - Describe your interest in this position and the relevance of your background.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume.

Notes:
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
- Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
- The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000.00 - $5,996.00/month. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
- This is a full-time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
