Job Description
Summary

King County Road Services Division is looking for an Equipment Operator to join our dynamic team! Our successful candidate will be skilled at work requiring the operation of heavy road maintenance equipment with complex controls, in a safe and efficient manner. Job Duties

  • Determine safe and efficient methods for operation of all County equipment.
  • Safely operate front-end loaders with bucket size of two and one-half to four yards.
  • Safely operate a grader (weighing over ten tons) in the repair and maintenance of roads, shoulders, and other roadway features.
  • May be requested to work down in the event of emergencies, equipment failures and repairs, or as needed onsite.
  • Safely operate backhoe, track hoe, grader, road brooms, slope mowers, roller, and dozer in the maintenance and construction of roads, road right-of-way, and other public facilities.
  • Respond courteously to general public.
  • Perform a variety of manual tasks requiring the use of hand tools and hand held power tools as required.
  • Inspect assigned vehicles and perform minor preventative maintenance and associated manual tasks to correct safety problems as necessary.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Possession of a valid WA State Driver's License and a CDL Class B license by the time of hire.
  • Ability to work independently and in team environment.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, county and local environmental regulations related to the operating heavy equipment.
  • Ability to operate a backhoe, track hoe, front-end loader, rollers, slope mower, broom truck, dozer, and grader.
  • Knowledge of basic survey principles.
  • Reading various road maps.
  • Familiarity with and skill in using small hand tools.
  • Knowledge of traffic control methods.
  • Skill and mechanical aptitude in use and care of tools and equipment.
  • Communications skills.
  • Basic knowledge of blueprints, plans and specifications.
  • Basic mathematics skills.
  • Defensive driving skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply construction safety principles and practices at all times.
  • Ability to have predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to demonstrate behaviors that include fairness, respect, and inclusiveness.
  • Skill in operating equipment in high-density traffic under adverse weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of road building materials.
  • Ability to effectively serve on a team that contributes to a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Equipment operator experience related to road construction and maintenance
  • Possession of a valid Washington State Flagging Certificate, valid CPR and First Aid certifications.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S):
  • As a condition of employment for jobs in this classification, as required by federal regulations, the applicant selected must submit to drug testing and test negative for presence of controlled substances; sign a Consent Form for release of Information for each employer for the past three (3) years; and successfully pass a background check for Alcohol and Controlled Substances testing, and a CDL background information check. The selected candidate will be required to pass a physical examination prior to employment, which may include an x-ray of the lower back and audiogram.
  • A copy of valid medical card will be required to be submitted at time of hire.

Supplemental Information

  • Following our review of applications, competitive candidates will be invited for an interview and skills assessment to demonstrate the ability to operate heavy equipment to include a loader, grader, and backhoe.
  • The typical work schedule during spring/summer months is Monday - Thursday for 10-hour days. During fall/winter, we move to a Monday - Friday schedule with 8-hour shifts. It is possible that this position may work an 8-hour night shift during fall/winter. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. Working after-hours, weekends, and holidays may be required in emergency circumstances, such as during inclement weather, and on special projects. Overtime hours, weekends, and holidays vary upon business demand, season and weather.
  • This posting may be used to fill additional vacancies including career service positions, TLT, SDA, and STT needs for up to six months.
  • This posting is for multiple locations.
  • This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 302.

The King County Road Services Division designs, builds, operates and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated areas of King County in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner to protect the public's investment and facilitate safe travel. The division is committed to ensuring the county's transportation system is safe and efficient for all uses and modes of travel. The Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road and 182 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.
