General Information

This is responsible work in performing a variety of manual tasks in the operation of one or more types of moderately heavy motor equipment.

Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience, and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a minimum of the eighth grade, preferably high school graduation or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, and a minimum of one year's experience with the ability to demonstrate skill in the operation of one or more pieces of Equipment Operator II level equipment; or a combination of education or experience equivalent to these requirements.


SPECIAL REQUIREMEN
T: Must possess a valid commercial driver's license for the type of equipment operated. An exception may be made for the specific equipment listed below. This equipment will require that a commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements, including air brake endorsement (if applicable) is obtained prior to completion of the six month working test period.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK
: Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in working with heavy equipment; good knowledge of traffic rules and regulations; skill in the operation of one or more of the following pieces of equipment: side-arm or multi-deck rotary or multi-deck flail mower, tandem truck including solid waste, water truck, fuel truck, single axle truck with heavy equipment trailer, street sweeper, rubber tired self-propelled backhoe up to three-eights cubic yard bucket, truck mounted hydraulic crane up to six tons, self-propelled roadway compaction equipment, liquid asphalt distributor, asphalt patch truck, small wrecker, trenching machine up to twenty-four inches, vactor, trash truck, barko loader, highway mower, truck mounted front end loader, rex or landfill compactor, and transfer station or stationary compactor; ability to drive a truck and trailer; ability to load and unload heavy equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to plan and supervise the work of other employees; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to perform manual tasks related to operating equipment.

Description

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Operates assigned equipment in the performance of various tasks; inspects lights, horn, brakes and other safety and operating equipment; maintains equipment and makes minor repairs; cleans and inspects equipment; checks fuel, oil, grease, water, filters, tires and overall general condition; plans for and schedules equipment moves; sprays roads, parks and landfills; trains and supervises the work of others as required; keeps records and fills out daily reports; explains rules and regulations to other employees and the general public; responds to after hours emergency situations as needed; monitors inventory of tools and supplies; inspects work site conditions to ensure the safety of work area; performs related work as required.

Important Information

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for operating equipment safely and efficiently and for cleaning, maintaining, servicing and repairing the equipment. Work is performed in accordance with standard operating procedures under the supervision of a designated supervisor. Supervision is exercised over other workers as assigned. An Equipment Operator II must be able to lift items weighing over thirty pounds.
