Job Description

This position serves as an Equipment Operator E on a three-person construction crew that typically covers the Southern Lower Peninsula of Michigan and is based out of Allegan, Michigan. The Allegan Construction Crew covers an area typically from US-10 south to the neighboring states and from Lake Michigan to Detroit. Jobs have been completed as far southeast as Monroe, MI (Sterling State Park) and as far northwest as Ontonagon, MI (Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park). The Allegan Construction Crew is on the FEMA call-out list and can be/has been called to respond to natural and man-made disasters in the State of Michigan.
The selected candidate will assist at various locations across the State of Michigan in maintenance and construction related activities at Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) operated Boating Access Sites, Harbors, State Parks/Recreation Areas, Campgrounds on State Forest Land, Pathways, Trails, and Trailheads. The selected candidate shall be able to operate and maintain light and heavy equipment, as well as transport this equipment to various places across the State of Michigan (once CDL is obtained). The selected candidate shall provide guidance and direction to summer staff in accordance with the DNR, Parks and Recreation Division, policy and rules and regulations. The selected candidate shall promote safety as a personal responsibility, report any hazards and unsafe conditions to supervisor immediately.
Employee must maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with an air brake endorsement.
An employee will have 6 months from time of hire to successfully obtain and hold a CDL license if they do not possess a CDL upon hire. To meet federal training guidelines for CDL holders, attendance at a 3-4-week truck driving school is required. These trainings may require overnight stays in / at a learning facility.

Equipment Operator E8
Two years of experience operating motorized equipment used in construction, maintenance, heavy transport, agriculture, or forestry, including one year equivalent to an Equipment Operator 7.

Alternate Education and Experience
Completion of vocational training that provided practical experience in operating equipment used by these classifications may be substituted for six months of experience.

Vacation and Sick Leave: Eligible full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 personal days and 13 sick days per year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions.

Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees can take 12 weeks of paid leave immediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.

Paid Holidays: Eligible employees receive 13 or 14 paid holidays each year including New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve and Day.

Bonus Programs: Eligible employees with five years of service also receive annual longevity bonuses that grow as seniority increases. Some positions also may qualify for recruitment, retention, and performance bonuses or other special pay premiums.

Military Pay Differential: Employees in the guard or reserves may also qualify for supplemental pay benefits if miliary pay during qualifying duty is less than normal state pay.
