POSITION OVERVIEW

As an Environmental Specialist you will lead the environmental compliance for Projects by coordinating, managing and implementing project-wide environmental compliance programs and strategies.

DISTRICT OVERVIEW

Kiewit’s Central District is one of our largest infrastructure districts specializing in heavy civil, structural concrete/bridge, water/wastewater, and transportation projects. We self-perform work such as mass grading, drainage, paving, utility and more - so be ready to get your hands dirty! While headquartered in Denver, Colorado, the majority of our work is concentrated in the Central and South-Central regions of the United States. We are looking for people committed to the construction industry rather than design.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Liaise with environmental agencies and attend field visits with client and regulatory agencies.
  • Identify, assess and reduce environmental risks to the company.
  • Identify and obtain applicable permits and manage as required in the Environmental Management System.
  • Identify project materials and vendors needed to support the environmental requirements at the project.
  • Identify applicable environmental requirements at federal, state and local levels for the project which may include hazardous waste, air quality, storm water, spill plans, etc.
  • Provide input to work plans and participate in meetings.
  • Monitor, forecast and communicate environmental costs at the project level.
  • Develop a comprehensive compliance tracking matrix to capture all environmental requirements.
  • Participate in project audits (both internal and external).
  • Lead the environmental compliance for the Project by coordinating, managing and implementing project-wide environmental compliance programs and strategies.
  • Perform and oversee field inspections and monitoring (water, waste, noise, etc.)
  • Review and interpret environmental specifications and drawings.
  • Prepare, update and implement site specific environmental plans and submit required reports.
  • Develop and conduct environmental protection and awareness training to staff at all levels.
  • Communicate with field crews to ensure understanding of project environmental requirements.
  • Identify, document, report and develop corrective actions for environmental incidents.
  • Maintain records of all requirements and monitor compliance tools.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to travel and relocate as needed.
  • Demonstrated experience related to the areas of responsibility for environmental compliance for major transportation construction projects or similar is a plus, but not required.
  • Effective and strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong work ethic and willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Power Point, Word, Excel) and other relevant software systems.
  • Excellent organization abilities and time management skills.
  • Uncompromising attitude toward safety and integrity.
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental health, environmental engineering, environmental studies or another related field is preferred.
  • Highly motivated and self-managed to get things done right the first time.
  • Interest in an environmental role in a construction project setting.
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting environmental permitting on construction projects
  • Stormwater inspections and reporting
  • SWPPP and SPCC Plan development and implementation
  • Experience conducting environmental audits
  • Experience developing and implementing training programs
  • Experience interfacing with environmental regulators at the local, state and federal level
Other Requirements:
  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
  • Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.

Base Compensation: $60,301 - $85,000
(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
