The Position
Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. The Bureau of Water Quality Planning (BWQP) is responsible for carrying out Clean Water Act provisions to protect, restore, and maintain the quality of Nevada's surface waterbodies. Core functions include setting water quality standards for surface waters throughout the state, and monitoring and assessing the chemical and biological health of surface waters. To support these functions, BWQP created a Bioassessment Program in 2000 to monitor and assess the ecological integrity of Nevada's wadable streams and rivers, lakes, and wetlands. Ecological integrity is the capability of a surface waterbody to support and maintain a balanced, integrated community of organisms having a species composition, diversity, and functional organization comparable to that of the natural habitat of the region. It is determined by biological condition, water quality, and physical habitat in and around the waterbody.
This is an Environmental Scientist 2 underfilling for Environmental Scientist 3 in the Bioassessment Branch, which coordinates with other staff to perform the following duties to meet the following objectives: 1. Conduct monitoring according to specified protocols to assess the biological condition, water quality, and physical habitat of wadable streams and rivers throughout the State. 2. Supervise crews of up to four technicians in the field, ensuring personal safety and adherence to established protocols. 3. Spend up to 5 consecutive days in the field, often camping in remote areas, and traveling in 4 wheel drive vehicles on rough terrain. 4. Manage and utilize bioassessment data to support the development of water quality standards (WQS) and total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) and inform impaired water body listing/delisting decisions. 5. Participate in EPA's National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS), a five-year rotating cycle of aquatic assessments including lakes and wetlands in addition to rivers and streams. 6. Protect human and wildlife health through detection and monitoring of harmful algal blooms (HABs) and coordinating with the appropriate entities to notify the public when toxins are determined to be present in harmful levels. The State of Nevada is committed to Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action in recruitment of its employees and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion or belief, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, domestic partnership, genetic information (GINA), or compensation and/or wages. *** THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. APPLICANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE***
