Entry Level Environmental Scientist

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB’s growing Natural Science team is seeking an entry-level Environmental Scientist to join our South Portland, ME office.

Responsibilities

• Preparation of permit applications, application narratives and supporting documents and reports
• Assist project managers with development of federal, state and local permit applications, agency consultations and assist throughout permitting process
• Permit compliance and construction monitoring for energy and land development projects
• Perform natural resource surveys including, but not limited to, wetland delineations and wetland functional assessments, vernal pool surveys, wildlife habitat evaluations, and vegetation surveys

• Ability to identify and/or key out northeast plant species
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
• Self-motivated with attention to detail
• Ability to characterize soil profiles and identify hydric soils
• Understanding or familiarity with state and federal wetland and natural resource regulations in Maine is a plus

• Must have the ability to conduct challenging tasks independently
• Ability/willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
• 0-1 year of experience
• BS in environmental science, natural resources, wetland science, or a related field
• Experience or expertise in identifying and characterizing plants, soils, amphibians and/or vernal pools is a plus
