MT Program:


The MT Program is a non-rotational program that develops leaders who will drive the future of our organization. It’s a paid, full-time program for recent graduates with less than four years of professional work experience. RELOCATION WILL BE REQUIRED:

  • An ideal candidate should be very flexible regarding location
  • Relocation assistance may be provided to those who are moving more than 50 driving miles from their permanent residence.
  • Once training has been completed, candidates will likely be relocated again to an assigned, permanent location


JOB DESCRIPTION:


The Management Trainee (MT) Program is specifically designed to develop leaders who will drive the future of our organization. This training program is approximately 12 months in length and includes both classroom and on-the-job training. You will gain experience in our Track, Engineering Services, Structures, Signal, Mechanical, Transportation, and Environmental departments. With challenging work, the desire to learn, and the ability to develop relationships, career opportunities are endless.


TRAINING:


THE ENGINEERING SIGNAL MANAGEMENT TRAINEE PROGRAM BEGINS WITH A FAST-PACED, INTENSIVE TRAINING PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES:


  • One (1) week orientation conducted at our company headquarters in Fort Worth, TX
  • Associated on-the-job field training conducted at assigned location
  • Training lasts approximately 12 months
  • 4 weeks of Signal Apprenticeship training
  • Two (2) weeks of technical (e.g. rules, safety) and personnel training conducted at our Technical Training Center (TTC) in Overland Park, KS


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Engineering Signal:


  • The Signal Department is responsible for INSPECTING, MAINTAINING, REPAIRING, AND CONSTRUCTING our Signal infrastructure along our right of way including wayside signals, highway grade crossings, and signal bungalows
  • The Engineering Signal headquarters is located in Lenexa, KS but the trainee may be required to relocate anywhere on BNSF’s network
  • Engineering leaders are responsible for the SAFETY of their teams, PLANNING/SCHEDULING of required maintenance and repairs, and VERIFYING the quality of work completed.
  • Trainees will shadow positions such as Signal Supervisor, Signal Construction Supervisor, Signal Maintainer, Signal Manager, and Director of Signal to gain boots on the ground experience


UPON COMPLETION OF THE MT PROGRAM:


  • Trainees will receive a salary increase upon placement into permanent assignment
  • Relocation will likely be required upon placement into permanent assignment
  • MT will likely be placed in an Assistant Signal Supervisor position (career progression after this is employee driven)-see below for more information on this position


Assistant Signal Supervisor Information & Responsibilities:


  • Ensure, by suitable means, that signal systems are performing properly and in accordance with prescribed testing and inspection procedures and maintenance standards
  • Render technical advice and assistance when required by signal personnel or representatives of other departments
  • Determine by examination that signal personnel are adequately knowledgeable of Safety and Operating Rules
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are complied with
  • Assist Supervisor Signal and General Construction Supervisor in managing the operating budget allocation and establishing requirements for future year’s budget
  • Directly supervise the signal maintenance and construction personnel so that established objectives will be met
  • Provide leadership and exercise resourcefulness in accomplishing the repair of signal systems when damage has occurred as a result of derailments, collisions, severe storms or other destructive forces
  • Define and describe to signal personnel the technical aspects of new methods or systems to be employed, including the proper use of special tools, instruments and electronic equipment
  • Report progress at prescribed intervals of signal maintenance and construction work
  • Assist General Construction Supervisor and Assistant Director Signal Construction in managing capital spending within budgets


WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Work in a 24 x 7 operations environment including nights, weekends, evenings and holidays, on-call or available for emergency situations.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet). Work around heavy and moving machinery.
  • Work around electronics, including electric currents. Work in and around bridges in elevated locations.


TRAVEL:


  • Frequent and extensive travel over a large geographic region will be required.


HOURS OF WORK:


  • Hours are irregular with a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Schedule involves nights, weekends, and holidays, as BNSF is a 24 X 7 work environment.


SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT:


  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Able and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) upon hire and to relocate within upon career progression and/or as business needs.
  • Able to travel up to 75% of the time based on business need.
  • Authorization to work in the US without Company sponsorship now AND in the future.
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Graduate degree from an accredited university to be completed prior to hire OR I have obtained a degree within the past four (4) years.
  • Ability to work in a 24/7 environment.
  • Have or anticipate to have at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA with a degree in Engineering OR a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA with a non-Engineering degree.
  • Able to work in a shop, terminal, or field environment, climb on ladders and walk on uneven surfaces safely.
  • Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Have four (4) years or less of professional work experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held pursuing a degree in high school and/or college.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Completed a degree (or anticipated degree) in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, etc.), Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Construction Management, Business, OR a similar degree program.
