WALLA WALLA FOUNDRY
You've probably seen art built at Walla Walla Foundry, but didn't know it. Walla Walla Foundry is one of the largest contemporary sculpture fabricators in the world. Originally founded in 1980 as a bronze casting foundry, we now have about 100 employees, and we produce work in a range of materials and through multiple processes for some of the most well-known contemporary artists.
ABOUT THE ENGINEER / PROJECT MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT (PMA) POSITION
Walla Walla Foundry is seeking an Engineer / Project Management Assistant to join our team. The position offers the opportunity to engage project management skills as well as develop an in-depth understanding of contemporary art production methods. This position will work very closely with the Foundry Project Managers and the President to support existing and create new production methods in support of building monumental contemporary sculptures.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Engineering Support
  • Utilize CAD (Rhino, Solidworks, Polyworks, etc.) to create internal structures given available information of the artists intent.
  • Work closely with the metal shop to properly plan and troubleshoot projects as they progress from beginning to end.
  • Support other departments as needed to create better, more efficient processes.
  • Understand and implement the technology and tools available to create the most efficient and accurate production method for a given task.
  • Create/design jigs, templates, and drawings in support of the shop to create precise, safe, and structurally sound weldments and assemblies.
Project Management Support
  • Assist shops in tracking and documentation of production processes, including weights, dimensions, materials, etc. for both historical record and execution of subsequent editions of the work.
  • Support project management operations through database administration, including accurate end-processing of projects.
  • Observe fabrication and installation strategies with the ability to digest and create clear process records for use in production or for clientele.
  • Prepare reports for internal and external use.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, a holistic understanding of various Foundry processes and materials, and a sensitivity to the artistic and aesthetic goals of each work.
  • High level of dedication and a willingness to place a high priority on the job.
  • Ability to digest and synthesize complicated information and convey back in a succinct and timely manner.
  • Passion for contemporary art processes and a desire to work in an agile, fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Passionate about creating positive service experiences for external and internal stakeholders
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, research, and administrative skills.
  • Must be highly organized, with the ability to set priorities and manage time independently to meet deadlines for concurrent projects.
  • Clean driving record and valid driver's License
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new databases and software programs
Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Ability to create and understand shop drawings. We will provide training in our internal systems and processes, but a candidate should be well versed in industry standard weldment and GD&T notations and concepts.
  • Experience with parametric surface-based CAD systems a huge plus. Solidworks is our main software for design.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software.
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline such as Mechanical Engineering, Fabrication Engineering, Structural Engineering and/or other related field and minimum 2 years work experience, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience with complex fabrication techniques. Ability to utilize technology to create jigging and fixturing.
  • Experience with mesh modeling software's is a huge plus as well (Rhino, Z Brush, Polyworks, GeoMagics, etc.)
  • Knowledge of under the hook lifting and equipment design a plus
  • Experience with non-traditional metals (bronze, copper, brass, etc.) a plus.
  • Welding and Shop experience is considered a plus for this position.
  • Work/working experience should include:
  • CNC (especially 5 Axis) experience a plus.
WORK HOURS
Regular Foundry working hours are 7 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Additional work time beyond these hours, depending on project load may be required. OT is a regular occurrence.
WAGE AND BENEFITS
This is an hourly, non-exempt role. Any hours worked above 40 in one week is Overtime and paid at time and a half. Depending on experience and skills, the successful candidate will be hired at level 2 or 3 as follows:
  • Engineer / PMA 3- 5+ years and fully meets all knowledge and experience. Hourly wage: Min: $24.42 Mid: $30.51 Max: 36.62
  • Engineer/ PMA 2-5 years relevant experience; developing skills and knowledge listed in the experience section. Hourly wage: Min: 22.40 Mid: 28.00 Max: 33.59
In general, the Foundry's pay practice is to hire slightly below or at mid-point.
