Reporting to the Nurse Director, with direction from the Registered Nurse, this position is responsible for providing high quality, individualized basic patient care activities as identified by the RN, using the components of the nursing process.
Position Summary:
- Practices universal precautions.
- The EDT contributes to the patient care process by preparing patients/families for procedures and assisting the RN and MD in these processes.
- Applicable for the populations checked below: Infant (x ) Pediatric ( x ) Adult ( x ) Geriatric ( x )
- Maintains knowledge of, and demonstrates the ability to identify therapeutic patient care issues and assist with patient care activities for the infant through geriatric patient population. The EDT also assists with appropriate care through the health care continuum.
- Using hospital and regulatory standards of care, the EDT demonstrates the implementation and basic nursing assistant aspects of the trans-disciplinary care plan. In conjunction with the patient/family and with the direction of the RN, the EDT provides care based on the individualized patient care plan. The EDT observes and reports patient issues/concerns/problems on an ongoing basis. Performs vital sign measurement, oxygen administration, application of dressings, gait and crutch training, phlebotomy, splint application, application of electrocardiograph electrodes and monitoring and patient care services which by training, policy, procedure and competency validation are performed.
- Assures that the rights of all patients are respected and maintained by allowing for privacy and dignity in the provision of patient care activities. Adapts approaches based on cultural and religious diversity.
- Performs duties in a manner that provides for the physical, psycho-social and spiritual needs of the critically ill patient including performing basic patient care activities. Incorporates cultural and ethnic factors into gathering data elements of assessments/reassessments; correctly differentiating between normal and abnormal findings; and incorporates the functional/developmental age into these activities for the infant through geriatric patient population.
- Demonstrates the ability to provide assistance in emergency situations and follows established emergency procedures and practices, as appropriate.
- Reinforces patient/family educational needs as identified by the RN and helps provide individualized basic teaching during the care giving process which considers the functional/developmental age and the needs of the infant through geriatric population. The EDT observes and reports the effectiveness of the patient/family teaching through observation of patient responses.
- Communicates and follows the organizational chain of command for notification of patient care/service issues, when appropriate.
- Responds appropriately to concerns regarding patient safety based on the physical environment, equipment and the patient’s behavior.
- The EDT is aware of the reporting responsibilities and reports suspected cases of abuse, neglect, or domestic violence relative to the adolescent through geriatric patient population as appropriate.
- Demonstrates knowledge of age specific care, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings; and assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk as well as communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner.
- As a member of the health care team, the EDT implements and incorporates basic patient care activities across the continuum by effectively communicating with physicians, staff and other disciplines.
Other Position Accountabilities:
- Demonstrates an understanding of the procedures for reporting and responding to facility emergencies such as fire, infant abduction, disruption in utilities and hazardous materials spills.
- Demonstrates a positive professional image; performs responsibilities in a professional manner; demonstrates flexibility in the provision of patient care/service; utilizes a collaborative approach with co-workers.
- Actively participates in the Medical Center’s continuous quality improvement process.
- Demonstrates the ability to access and use computer systems; performs clerical functions at the back desk as necessary.
- Complies with the Medical Center’s policies and procedures, including timekeeping, dress code, attendance and the Code of Conduct.
- Maintains required applicable certification, educational and in-service requirements and actively participates in departmental staff meetings.
- Communicates with physicians, administrative staff, co-workers and patients/families in a respectful and caring manner.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrates knowledge of equipment capabilities, limitations, and appropriate/special applications.
- Attends and successfully completes general and departmental orientation, attends in-service programs and completes the annual mandatory update requirements.
- Completion of EMT training or equivalent.
- High School graduate or equivalent.

- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Minimum one year recent experience in an emergency setting preferred
- Basic EKG course preferred.
- BLS card and CPI training.
- LA County Fire Card
