Job Description
CMCB is seeking a motivated and student-centered band director to direct a mixed band for elementary and middle school students in a Greater Boston area school. This is a great opportunity for candidates with demonstrated group teaching experience who are looking for community, growth opportunities, and a compensation structure that also includes paid administrative time and paid professional development opportunities! The ideal candidate will have a professional background in clarinet, flute, trumpet, and/or trombone. Additional teaching opportunities are available for candidates with the ability to play and teach multiple instruments and/or candidates who are interested in private teaching.
Status: Part time hourly, exempt
Start Date: Wednesday-Thursday, August 29-30, 2023 - Faculty Orientation; Saturday, September 9, 2023 - Classes Begin
Schedule: In person, Monday-Friday, 2-8 hours / week during school and 2 hours / week after school, East Boston
Reports to: Community Engagement and Clinical Manager (CECM)
Works Closely With: Senior Director of Community Engagement Programs (SDCEP), Faculty Instructional Leads (FIL's), and Community Engagement Programs Coordinator
General Responsibilities
  • Teach students according to curricular guidelines
  • Be an active, knowledgeable, and visible ambassador for CMCB in the community
  • Treat all students, school staff and coworkers with respect and dignity
  • Be knowledgeable about CMCB's mission and policies
Specific Responsibilities
Music Instruction and Curriculum Development
  • Work with staff and faculty to implement musical and non-musical curricular goals
  • Provide engaging, culturally inclusive, learner-centered, accessible and motivating group instruction that focuses on the fundamentals of music
  • Work with students and school staff to develop mid- and end-of-year culminating events when applicable (concert, recording, community event, etc.)
  • Clarify curriculum expectations with supervisor
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by CECM or SDCEP
  • Participate in mid-year and year end reviews with SDCEP or CECM
  • Communicate clearly with CMCB staff and partners
  • Use CMCB email address to respond to pertinent emails from staff and partners
  • Complete attendance in registration software accurately
  • Attend the annual faculty orientation
  • Attend at least three paid professional development opportunities
  • Document student outcomes in collaboration with the CECM
Qualifications
Essential
  • Experience working with diverse populations of students
  • Must be adept at and comfortable with working in a culturally diverse environment with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as pedagogical and professional values
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite (Google Docs, Google Forms, and Google Sheets)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, when conversing with students, families, and colleagues
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching in a group setting
  • Demonstrated ability to actively listen to and learn from others
  • Bachelor's degree in music performance or education with knowledge in the field of winds/brass performance/pedagogy or equivalent experience
  • Ability to motivate and/or inspire others
  • Demonstrated experience teaching fundamental and introductory music material to elementary-age students
  • Interest in the following focus areas: culturally inclusive teaching, amplifying student voice, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
  • Positive attitude and growth mindset
  • Strong classroom management skills
Preferred
  • Experience working in a public school or community setting
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  • Fluency in Spanish is highly desirable
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the person in this position must be able to to remain in a stationary position 25-50% of the time. They need to constantly move around the space to access teaching supplies, instruments, and students. They must also converse with students in a normal classroom setting and discern and recognize changes in tone, pitch, rhythm, and volume. They may occasionally move or transport supplies and instruments up to 10 pounds.
