Job Title: Elementary School Teacher (47)
Department: Instruction
Reports to: Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt
Pay Scale: Teacher Scale A
General Description:
The elementary classroom teacher plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in kindergarten through grade five. The teacher manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, modifies instructional activities as required, and performs a variety of student monitoring and controls activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Plans appropriate instructional strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate principles of learning, classroom organizational structures, and kind and level of materials.
- Manages allotted learning time to maximize students achievement.
- Provides continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of their children’s progress.
- Ensures that classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthy, safe, and conducive to learning and that materials are accessible to students and in good conditions.
- Supports or participates in grade-level and school-wide student instructional or related activities, social events, and approved fundraising activities.
- Assigns work to and provides direction for instructional assistants, parents, and student volunteers.
- Requests assistance from resource personnel, as needed.
- Manages the behavior of learners in the instructional setting to provide an environment that is conducive to the learning process and assists and participates in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school and school grounds.
- Works in self-contained, team, departments, itinerant capacity, or at a field work site, as assigned.
- Assesses student achievement and maintains appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting.
- Implements an instructional program that provides appropriate learning experiences for each student.
- Assesses student abilities related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
- Participates in in-service and staff development activities, and other staff meetings as required or assigned.
- Utilizes a variety of instructional materials, media, and computer technology to enhance learning.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Excellent organizational, planning and human relations skills.
- Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of elementary level instruction.
- Good knowledge of early childhood growth and development.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of children.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, peers, and parents.
Education, Training, and Experience Requirement:
- Eligible for a provisional, collegiate professional or postgraduate professional license, with an endorsement to teach at the assigned grade level or subject area.
Physical Attributes/Demands:
The position requires standing, walking, sitting, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 25 pounds, such as papers, books, and instructional supplies. Work requires sufficient mobility to move about the classroom and inside and outside the school building.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated by the principal or designee in accordance with the school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of instructional personnel.
