Job Description
Repairs, inspects, and installs systems, apparatus, and components of railroad radio and electronic systems and subsystems.


  • Maintain written records of all tests, inspections, and repairs per¬formed
  • Installs, maintains and repairs railroad radio and other communication equipment according to layout plans, schematics and/or Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations
  • Examines electronic equipment and disassembles same to replace, clean, adjust, or repair parts, wires, relays, or circuits to the component level
  • Climbs poles or digs trenches to install or repair equipment
  • Maintains defect detectors, AEI systems, end of train (EOT) and Head of Train (CDU) devices; analyzes operational malfunctioning with testing devices to locate, diagnose, and ascertain repairs to be made
  • Operates and tests equipment to ensure elimination of malfunction


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • Associates Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology or equivalent
  • One (1) year experience and/or training in radio and radar repair


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 3 - 5 years of experience in an Electronic Repair position
  • Class B CDL driver license


KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS


  • Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)
  • Ability to utilize a computer to access external devices for the purpose of equipment setup, diagnostics, and software patches/ upgrades
  • Basic Math skills
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete var¬iables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications--both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)


JOB REQUIREMENTS


  • Walking over uneven terrain and getting on and off equipment
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis
  • Heavy work, lifting up to 60 pounds
  • Climb ladders and poles up to at least 40 feet to make repairs, tests and installations
  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work


EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS


  • Must pass all required assessments
  • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examination
  • This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement, membership is required
  • Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
  • Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including drug and physical capabilities
  • Must pass a background screening
  • Wear protective equipment including hearing protection, safety-toe boots, hard hat and safety glasses
  • Regional travel required and may require 100% travel away from home
  • Must successfully complete probationary period
  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work


ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS


  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme heat
  • Regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock
  • Work outside in all weather conditions and on occasion at elevated heights
