Job Description

**Salary Grade :NC09 Salary Range: $37,577 to $65,760**
Positions 60019429 and 60019436 will be filled from this posting. You only have to apply once to be considered for both positions.
This is skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic traffic control systems, lighted signs and roadway lighting. Duties performed include: install traffic signal equipment by wiring/installing signal head, wiring detectors, installing/wiring controllers. Traces out electrical wiring diagram, locates trouble, dismantles control, replaces worn or faulty parts, reassembles, and tests the traffic control system, and may supervise helpers. Re-lamping/repairing roadway light fixtures, troubleshooting and repairing roadway lighting control cabinets. Skills required include: general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe/efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trades. Possess the ability to diagnose source of equipment failures, as well as possess the ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. Overtime work is required when necessary and positions subject to emergency callback.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:.

  • Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components
  • Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal supervision
  • Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams

Additional Expectations:

Possess the ability to heavy lifting to shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 50 feet in height. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. Applicant must possess the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signs and other traffic control devices. As well as must possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and hot outside conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. May be required to work during non-traditional work hours including weekends, holidays, nights and times of emergency. A valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s Permit within 60 days of start date and Class “A” Driver’s License within 90 days of start date is mandatory. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form(ALCDRG-01) and background statement(ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes are required.

**Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
