The Master Electrician will ensure all electrical systems operate as designed. The master electrician will oversee or perform routine installations; maintain, test, calibrate, and repair new and/or existing equipment and systems as well as related piping.
Per established procedures the master electrician installs, inspects, replaces, tests, and performs repairs to electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances that maintain the supply and integrity of electrical power for lighting and equipment throughout the Hospital facilities.
Work is composed a variety of special projects to support both capital improvement and deferred maintenance efforts along with routine corrective and preventive maintenance tasks. Monitor the installation and repair of equipment and systems by contractors as part of these special initiatives.
Perform minor H.V.A.C, Mechanical, and/or Plumbing tasks as required, when related to electrical duties.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
The Master Electrician is responsible for handling the installation, maintenance and repair of all plant electrical systems and equipment in accordance with state and local codes and departmental standards in a variety of settings: clinical, research, office, and food service.
- Obtains permits as necessary, performs code-compliant electrial work, and exercises considerable judgement in making decisions with limited supervision.
- Contributes to a positive work environment focused on working safely.
- Works on special projects and/or programs to support energy efficiency and resiliency efforts.
- Evaluates remaining equipment life expectancy, new equipment purchases, vendor maintenance agreements, and other electrical work-related decisions upon request.
- Recognizes and diagnoses any problems relative to 4160 volt transmission lines, high voltage switchgear and plant-wide transformers, as demonstrated through accurate reporting of malfunctions.
The Master Electrician takes a strategic approach to daily assignments:
- Develops methods (labor, materials) and estimates duration required to complete electrical work portion of corrective and/or preventive work orders.
- Sees that work is done in a neat and professional manner.
- May assist in mentoring apprentices to learn good work practices and the trade.
- Completes other work as assigned.
- Emergency and routine repairs are responded to within department timeframes and meet regulatory requirements.
Regularly inspects equipment to ensure proper, safe, and efficient operations. Follows recommended maintenance schedules and procedures to extend the life of equipment. Installs, maintains, repairs, inspects, and troubleshoots:
- CCTV installation
- Electrical kitchen equipment
- Inter-communication lines, signal wiring, inter-building telephone systems/lines
- Power and lighting wiring
- New 208/120 volt feeders
- Any and all-electrical raceways, including rigid, conduit, EMT, PVC, wire mold, and Romex
- Emergency circuit wiring, generators with transfer switches
- Fire alarm systems, intrusion alarm systems, and emergency circuits
- Computer lines and wiring across facility location
- Various low voltage wiring
Tests, repairs, cleans, inspects, tags, and maintains accurate records according to established procedures and manufacturers' specifications of hospital- and/or patient-owned electrical equipment such as:
- Electrical appliances, shop tools, building lighting, switches, receptacles, etc.
- EKG’s, EEG’s, Defibrillators, etc.
Documentation reflects normal and emergency power and related panels, load centers and transformers as per department and regulatory guidelines. Completes meter readings in various transformer vaults, as demonstrated through accurate records.
Required Education and Licensure
- Master Electrician license, valid in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Continuing education per Commonwealth requirements and recertification is a condition for employment.
- High School, Vocational School diploma or GED is required. Experience is not accepted in lieu of this requirement.
Required Experience and Skills
- High level of service delivery. Demonstrate initative with ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and adapt to challenging situations.
- Which electrical codes typically apply to the work assignments in a variety of settings: clinical, research, office, and food service,
- Prior work in health care, research, or similar environments strongly preferred.
- Anticipates challenges; develops and implements strategies for addressing them.
- Deep knowledge of fire alarms systems and working familiarity with automated building maintenance systems.
- Computer proficiency required. Microsoft office applications preferred with ability to learn new software.
- Attention to detail.
- Work independently, be self-directed, and/or contribute as a member of a team.
- Effective verbal, electronic, and written communication skills using the English language.
- Must be able to read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations at level generally acquired through a high school education.
- Highly developed communications and interpersonal skills, working with diverse populations.
- Identify a situation, opportunity, problem, or issue; assess it from a variety of perspectives, consider several alternatives, and choose an appropriate course of action when presented with non-routine situations.
- Possesses knowledge of:
- Which electrical codes typically apply to the work assignments in a variety of settings: clinical, research, office, and food service,
- The standard methods and tools required by the trade, and
- When permits are required by Town officials.
