Job Description
Electrical Engineer – Protection and Controls (P&C)


Shell is currently seeking an Electrical Engineer, Protection & Controls (P&C) who will support the development of offshore wind projects with a focus on Protection and Control systems for HV components on the Offshore Substation (OSS) and Onshore Substation (ONSS). The team member can work from our office in New York, New York, Boston, MA, or Houston, TX, or New Orleans, LA. There is also flexibility for this team member to be based in another US state such as Mississippi, Alabama or Florida with the ability to work remotely.


Shell’s Powering Progress strategy includes developing renewable energy generation to unlock value and anchor integrated energy basins. Shell is excited to do this globally and with a portfolio of offshore wind projects in the Americas. One of these portfolios is the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind Joint Venture which is developing multiple projects offshore of New Jersey and New York.


Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, LLC (Atlantic Shores), a 50:50 partnership between Shell New Energies US and EDF Renewables. Atlantic Shores is comprised of purpose-driven professionals dedicated to delivering its 5+ gigawatt offshore wind portfolio, strategically positioned to meet the growing demands of multiple east coast markets including New York and New Jersey.


Atlantic Shores has three offshore wind energy lease areas totaling more than 262,000 acres under active development and is the largest offshore wind project in the State of New Jersey and the third largest project awarded in the United States. Construction will begin in 2024 and first power is expected in 2027. Project 1 will generate enough clean energy to power more than 700,000 homes and bring $848 million in guaranteed local economic benefits to the state.

Responsibilities:


  • Support commercial and technical work with external vendors, including support the tendering and execution of RFI and RFP
  • Participate in project team meetings, due diligence review and cross discipline cooperation
  • Work closely with Commissioning team and Electrical transmission team in the preparation of grid connection system commissioning plans as well as definition of protection concepts
  • Provide design guidance and technical verification to the OSS and ONSS package, including the review of contractor test plans, definition and review of employer’s requirements and technical specifications, guidance inputs for the design, procurement fabrication/construction, installation and commissioning phases
  • Interface with other technical, development, and commercial teams to ensure communication of required inputs and outputs
  • Ensuring that the protection systems work meets employer’s requirements and industry standards
  • Lead the review of Protection and Control Systems through FEED, detailed design, and execution of the OSS and ONSS works
  • Conduct site visits during ONSS Construction and OSS Fabrication to ensure compliance with design, technical specifications and requirements
  • Monitor technical compliance and reviewing calculations, drawings, and third-party analysis
  • Supervise the technical and logistics interface between protection system/equipment suppliers on OSS and ONSS
  • Contribute to preparing schedules and cost estimates for OSS and ONSS package(s)
  • Actively participate in the development of the Scope of work for the RFP, in the technical review of the proposals and the selection of the main contractors


Qualifications:


  • Knowledge with applicable data communication systems and protocols, high voltage commissioning
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Strong Knowledge of offshore wind energy production, or demonstrated experience with engineering of high voltage, dynamic P&C systems
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • Ability to travel every month to an Atlantic Shores or parent office for 3-5 days at a time


The base salary range for this position is $122,000.00 - $182,000.00 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.


Working Conditions:


During the development phase of the project, about 85% of time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of various Microsoft software/programs), phones, and general office equipment. Approximately 15% of the time is spent in the field nationally and internationally, visiting potential and existing projects, vendors and suppliers, and meeting with project team members. During construction, site visits or relocation will be adjusted as needed to support the project needs.
