The Opportunity


In this role, you will have the opportunity to:


  • Work with system modeling software programs (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM)
  • Develop downloadable setpoint files on multiple proprietary relay manufacturer software platforms. (SEL AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista, etc.)
  • Develop and manipulate logic commonly utilized in protection and control schemes.
  • Develop protective setpoints per industry standards, best practices, and client requirements.

The Team


As part of BV Operations, your skills will be aligned to projects that support our 3 market sectors- Governments & Environment, Energy & Process Industries, and Connectivity & Commercial. In an Engineering role, you will be engaged with exciting projects across the globe. From small community improvements to grand-scale Mega Projects, you will be Building a World of Difference through infrastructure growth and development while learning and focusing on your own individual development. Key Responsibilities


The ideal candidate has 2 years of protective relay experience, an understanding of Protection & Control (P&C) design concepts, familiarity with relay manufacturer software platforms, and familiarity with system modeling software along with the following responsibilities:


Engineering Standards:


  • Applies to assigned tasks as appropriate
  • Continues to learn and remains current on departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black and Veatch policies and procedures


Quality/Continuous Improvement:


  • Continues developing knowledge and complies with Black and Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks
  • Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts


Engineering Production:


  • Understands and adheres to budget, schedule, and quality requirements
  • Prepares and verifies less complex engineering deliverables
  • Performs research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection
  • Prepares engineering calculations following standard methods and principles
  • Collects, assimilates, and manages data for engineering work


Project Coordination:


  • Seeks out supervisor or project leadership to share information and gain guidance with respect to details of design and interdisciplinary coordination
  • Coordinates with others as assigned by supervisor or project leadership


Client Focus:


  • Focuses on the needs of internal clients (project team leadership) while attempting to gain basic understanding of external client's main interests and drivers
  • May provide support to business development or pursuit activities


Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology:


  • Shares current knowledge of latest technology and processes


Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to independently develop downloadable setpoint files on multiple proprietary relay manufacturer software platforms. (SEL AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista, etc.)
  • Ability to independently develop written communication and to facilitate coordination with team members and clients.
  • Knowledge of IEC 61850 (GOOSE, MMS, SV) and its implementation.
  • Knowledge of the predominant protection schemes and philosophies which are encountered in Transmission, Distribution and Renewable Collector Substations.
  • Understanding of basic Protection & Control design concepts including one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring, etc.
  • 2 years of experience in development of protective relay settings.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Familiarity with commonly utilized communication protocols (DNP, SEL, MMS, Modbus, etc.).
  • Familiarity with commonly deployed protective relays in substations environments (microprocessor, electronic, and electromechanical).
  • Familiarity with commonly utilized system modeling software programs (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM, etc.).
  • Ability to develop and manipulate logic commonly utilized in protection and control schemes.
  • Familiarity with Mathcad and Excel software for protective setting calculations.
  • Ability to develop protective setpoints per industry standards, best practices, and client requirements.


Minimum Qualifications


Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 1 year related work experience All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
