Job Description

Performs skilled line work in the operation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems; operates a variety of specialized related equipment and vehicles.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the close supervision of a Lead Lineman or Service Man and the general supervision of the Operations Superintendent or the Electric Utility Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Generally none. May exercise supervision over ground workers or other temporary staff as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs skilled work in placing and removing crossarms, stringing wires, tapping wires, replacing crossarms and wires, placing and replacing insulators and setting transformers.
  • Installs and maintains underground or overhead wiring systems as required.
  • Installs and connects wire, meters and other electrical services on customer premises.
  • Digs trenches and lays conduit and vaults. Splices wire and cable.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and trucks, and the use of attached equipment such as power diggers, winches or cranes.
  • Maintains safety practices and procedures, reports unsafe working conditions to immediate supervisor.
  • Performs skilled work in the reconstructing, maintaining and repairing electrical systems and equipment, including substation, distribution systems, transformers, and power lines.
  • Digs holes, frames poles, sets poles, hangs transformers, sags wire, energizes power lines. Sets distribution and transmission poles, anchors and guys.
  • Installs and maintains street lights and security lights.
  • Inspects, tests, calibrates and adjusts various controls or meters used in the electrical system.
  • Provides temporary power connection for contractors.
  • Keeps inventory, time and material records, as assigned; stocks service vehicles as required.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

  • Install and maintain various capacitor control equipment.
  • Maintenance and operation of distribution automation equipment.
  • Traffic signal troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Installs and maintains fiber optic system and equipment.
  • Airport runway lighting repairs and maintenance.
  • Forms, pours and finishes concrete for electrical equipment.
  • Responds to customer complaints.
  • Trims and removes trees and branches.
  • Storm Siren troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Electric revenue metering installation and checks.
  • Insures equipment is in proper working order, reports equipment malfunction to immediate supervisor.


DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

(A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

(B) Certification as a journey line worker.

(C) Four years experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

(A) Working knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in electrical distribution and transmission system maintenance work; Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; Considerable knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical circuits and wiring systems and ability to apply this knowledge to work situations.

(B) Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment; Skill in the application of first aid methods including artificial respiration.

(C) Ability to follow proper methods, procedures and safety precautions of line work; Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; Ability to work under extreme weather conditions.

(D) Skill in the operation of aerial manlifts, climbing poles and rescue techniques for both.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Oklahoma State Driver's License with CDL Class A endorsement, or ability to obtain one within three months of hire date. A journeyman lineworkers license or certification. Must live within a thirty (30) minute response time. Must have a working telephone for callback. Must be available for 24 hour callback. Will be required to work out of town in support of Mutual Aid agreements.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motorized vehicles and equipment including pickup, dump truck, manlift, digger derrick, backhoe, chipper, pole climbing equipment, hydraulic press, wire cutters, electrical testing equipment, hot sticks, clamp sticks, generator, chain saw, line tracer, hoists, climbing tools and various hand tools.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
