The Educational Opportunity Center is comprised of a multifaceted team consisting of professional counselors and administrators whose primary goal is to assist people from disadvantaged backgrounds in their career and post-secondary education endeavors. The Educational Opportunity Center fosters a culture of equity, growth mindset, teamwork, trust, respect, communication, and integrity. By working together as a team, The Educational Opportunity Center can serve over 3,000 District of Columbia residents every year, providing people with the foundation, skills, and resources needed to succeed in their educational and career journey.
About the Opportunity
The Educational Counselor of The Educational Opportunity Center helps provide career, education, financial aid, post-secondary advisement, and other forms of educational counseling to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who are pursuing post-secondary education. Through a collaborative approach, they provide counseling services designed to increase education and career opportunities through admission counseling and college selection; admission application assistance; assist with financial aid application and counseling; scholarship search; economic and financial literacy counseling and SAT assistance. This entrepreneurial leader designs and delivers transformative and measurable counseling workshops. Additionally, the Educational Counselor is responsible for partnership creation and sustainability.
In this role, you will:
  • Identify and recruit a minimum of 550 individuals in the greater Washington DC area who are interested in exploring career and college opportunities.
  • Foster and maintain partnerships/ stakeholders that provide resources that support clients in college and career success through distribution of EOC materials, workshops, and counseling services.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records on each participant/client inclusive of individualized learning plans, compile and submit weekly recruitment reports, submit bi-weekly client registration forms and complete quarterly assurance reports.
  • Design and facilitate strategic learning opportunities for clients (e.g., Counseling workshops, college tours, career fairs, informational sessions, seminars, etc.)
  • Serve as internal/ external lead/liaison for assigned client partnerships/organizations to coordinate and deliver EOC services in assigned program area.
  • Keep Director and Associate Director, EOC informed of any problems, opportunities and/or issues affecting disadvantaged learners.

To bring the above strategy to life, the Educational Counselor will assess, enhance, and streamline existing EOC practices and apply appropriate counseling services to ensure ongoing improvement. They will also enable business partners and key stakeholders to successfully expand EOC mission and vision ensuring strong alliance.

About You
You have:
  • Bachelor’s degree with course work in educational counseling, educational psychology, or related field.
  • Three to five years of directly related progressively responsible work experience in a professional position in educational counseling or a related field.
  • Project management and customer service experience.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting low-income students’ access to post-secondary education.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • You are authorised to work in the USA

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficient in PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and MS Project.
  • Experience managing relationships with third-party resources and vendors.
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple situations simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate to educators and students at various levels both in groups and on an individual basis.

The salary range for a new employee in this position in our Washington, D.C. office is $53,000 to $77,000. The salary offer of an individual candidate within this range is specific to their location and qualifications.
