POSITION DETAILS

The CUNY Office of Communications and Marketing works in partnership with the University’s academic and administrative offices and the 25 colleges to promote CUNY’s unique mission and transformative role as an engine of social mobility. The office includes seven divisions: Communications, Creative, Social Media, Marketing, Multimedia, CUNY TV and Citizenship Now. Together the teams manage all aspects of press and public relations, editorial content, art design, publishing, social media, advertisement, web development, TV, video and podcast production to tell the story of the premier urban public university in the United States.

Reporting to the Executive Editor, the Editorial Assistant will focus on providing support to a myriad of departmental initiatives.The Editorial Assistant will oversee the CUNY Weekly digital newsletter and the CUNY Clips media monitoring operation while also playing a key writing and editing role in support of editorial initiatives. This individual will also support a range of internal and external editorial efforts, including writing and editing pieces and releases, liaising with campuses to gather and compile information about students and faculty; academic initiatives; student support services; and campus events.

Other key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Drafts press releases on topics that advance the strategic communication goals of the Office of Communications and Marketing
  • Interviews students, teachers and administrators as part of information gathering process for editorial projects
  • Monitors social media platforms to track CUNY-related news and public commentary about the university and its colleges and programs, students, teachers and graduates
  • Supports information gathering for university-wide editorial projects
  • Reports, researches, gathers information for press releases, profiles and feature stories about teachers, students, research and academic programs across the university
  • Recruits and supervises student-interns for the platform; assigns and edits submissions; manages the blog and other web pages on WordPress
  • Searches local and national media sources and compiles morning clips that are widely distributed across the university on all weekday mornings
  • Manages the CUNY student blog and the development of student-driven editorial content
  • Prepares high-level analytics report for each CUNY Weekly newsletter, edits and fact checks press releases, and other written material
  • Cultivates and maintains communications contacts with all campuses to expand the Department’s knowledge of and ability to promote notable achievements and events within the University community
  • Compiles content for the CUNY Weekly newsletter including headlines, trending social media posts, media clips, university events, student profiles and job listings

NOTES:

  • Until further notice, work will be performed in a hybrid manner with 70% onsitepresence.
  • Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Concentration in Communications, Journalism or related fields.

  • Must be reliable, trustworthy and able to handle high levels of confidentiality
  • Strong interest in media, news and current events
  • Ability to effectively and independently lead projects to completion
  • Effective written and oral communication skills;
  • Experience editing press releases, announcements and similar materials

  • Adheres to journalistic standards for fact-finding, research, verification, and style
  • Produces material to be used in a number of formats such as print, web sites, and presentations
  • Researches and writes news releases, brochures, profiles, announcements, e-news stories and other materials as needed
  • May work with other professionals in admissions, marketing, public relations, development, or academic affairs to write brochures or marketing materials

Starting annual salary between$44,411 - $57,517,commensurate with education and experience.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022

City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the Emblem Health HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period. If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day. Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period.

An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to Emblem Health. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by Emblem Health before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the Emblem Health website.
