Summary
The echocardiographer is a certified health professional who, under the direction of an authorized user, is committed to applying the art and skill of diagnostic cardiac imaging through the safe and effective use of ultrasound. Responsibilities include direct patient care provided in a compassionate and timely manner. The echocardiographer's growth and development is maintained through ongoing medical/technical education, research and ultimately contributes to the delivery of quality patient care.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge of direct patient care by evaluating the patient, verifying patient ID, and related information to assure appropriate procedure is performed.
- Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement goals and monitors, participates in performance improvement projects and assists in acquisition of performance improvement data.
- Demonstrates competent use of a variety of computer functions, enters data in computer, documents all charges and runs incomplete work reports.
- Obtains and records images necessary to demonstrate normal and pathological findings. Documents all pertinent information, e.g., lab values, patient histories, etc. Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain clinical competency as required for the department for assignment to work with patients’ growth and developmental needs, particularly related to patients who are: adolescent, adult and geriatric as deemed necessary by designated facility.
- Knowledgeable of department procedures, can operate all equipment in department and demonstrates through clinical interaction with patients, knowledge of growth and developmental needs.
- Ensures patient comfort, privacy, and safety during procedure.
- Performs other clerical duties as needed to maintain optimum department needs and answers telephone, etc.
- Ensures work area, equipment and supplies are maintained in a clean and orderly condition. Assumes responsibility for inventory and reports all equipment malfunctions to supervisors.
- Performs an appropriate amount of procedures in a reasonable amount of time and utilizes time wisely for efficient department operation.
- Assesses, plans, implements and coordinates echocardiographic procedures and patient care during the procedures, directs and monitors echocardiographic procedures performed by other team members. May be requested to assist in stress testing, holter monitoring and EKG's.
- Monitors condition of patient and medical equipment that may be disturbed due to the nature of exam and report changes to patient care services.
- Follows all body substance isolation policies for ultrasound imaging procedures, e.g., wears gloves, gown, masks, shoe covers, and transports specimens in infection control bags.
- Explains procedure to patient, prepares patient for procedure and obtains and records patient history and consent form (if applicable).
- Attends mandatory annual required hospital in-services. Attends/participates in department in-services and actively participates in continuing education to maintain professional rating as required by accrediting agency.
- Documents sonographer's impression and relays findings to physician.
Requirements:
- Registry in Echo Sonography or ARDMS certified or registry eligible.
Experience:
- Obtained the clinical experience to perform echocardiography.
- 1 year experience in the cardiology field preferred with experience in echo sonography
