Job Description
  • Supports Materials Management department by delivering and stocking medical supplies for the satellite unit per established schedules. During periods when there is no patient transportation, assists the Materials Management department as needed.
  • Must be at least 21 years old. Required.
  • Working in dim or poorly lit areas
  • Inspects all occupant restraints, wheelchair tie down devices and checks operation of wheelchair lift to ensure personal and passenger safety and to minimize potential problems and equipment failures. Any known or discovered safety issues, defects or concerns are promptly reported. Consistently demonstrates proper techniques in boarding, dis-embarking and securing patients who use powered and non-powered wheelchairs using the various occupant restraint systems provided in each vehicle in accord with the manufacturer's recommendations and guidelines.
  • Vehicle operation with infrequent rest
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of major and local roads and selects and utilizes the safest and most efficient routes available.
  • Ability to perform body mechanics associated with loading and securing of manual and powered wheelchairs in vehicles equipped with wheelchair transportation equipment.
  • Minimum 3 years professional driving experience with safe driving record and no moving violations within the past five years. Required

  • Coordinates daily transportation schedule to assure all patient transportation needs are met minimizing the need to incur unnecessary fiscal expenses for transportation services provided by non-affiliated businesses.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Basic formulation, content, syntax and spelling are adequate to complete the task. Only simple sentence of very short paragraph expression is necessary.
  • Operating vehicles in light and heavy traffic conditions
  • Remains calm in an emergency and under difficult or emotional situations while ensuring the safety of all passengers and the public. Follows set policies and procedures for reporting of motor vehicle accidents or vehicle breakdowns.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
  • Provides safe, timely and unsupervised transportation of patients and, when necessary, any clinical staff required accompanying fragile and non-acute medically complex patients to designated locations within the state using one of the available wheelchair transportation vehicles. Maintains appropriate communication with clinical unit staff, drop-off and receiving locations.

  • Must possess exemplary communication, customer service and interpersonal skills and the ability to read, write and clearly understand written and verbal instructions. Required
  • Experience working with persons with physical challenges or disabilities and with vehicles equipped with wheelchair transportation equipment. Required
  • Task requires ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure including decimal fractions. Compute ratio, rate, and percent. Draw and interpret bar graphs. Perform basic arithmetic operations involving American monetary units.
  • WORK DEMANDS
  • Supports the department in the absence of the courier by assuring incoming mail is picked up at the post office and by appropriately sorting all mail, both incoming and interoffice, in a timely manner. Provides professional, courteous, accurate and timely delivery and pick-up of confidential, time sensitive and routine envelopes and packages between corporate owned or operated facilities, physician’s offices, and local businesses.
  • Ensures personal and public safety by performing daily inspections of wheelchair transport vehicles, related occupant restraints and tie down devices to assure lift to ensure personal and passenger safety and to minimize potential problems and equipment failures. Immediately reports any potential or identified safety concerns or issues to the appropriate individuals using the proper channels so as to minimize equipment breakdowns or failures.
  • Frequent gross and fine hand manipulation and grasping with one or both hands
  • COGNITIVE DEMANDS
  • Obeys all motor vehicle traffic laws and follows organizational policies and procedures for operation of fleet vehicles and reporting of motor vehicle breakdowns or accidents.
  • This position provides for safe and timely door to door transportation of patients who utilize manual and powered wheelchairs using vehicles equipped with wheelchair transportation lifts, wheelchair tie down devices and occupant restraint systems to designated destinations. The driver also provides demand response transportation of fragile or non-acute medically compromised patients and if needed any licensed staff caring for the patient to other healthcare facilities and medical offices. The driver must be willing to accommodate adjustments to daily work schedule so that requests made by hospital departments and support groups or requests approved in advance for individual patients to provide transportation for organized group trips, scheduled outings, special activities or other events during evenings or on weekends can be fulfilled. The driver also provides routine courier services and accommodates urgent and special requests for delivery of time sensitive and/or confidential documents or other materials and supplies.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Flexible work hours and schedule, occasional overtime
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling up to 100 pounds
  • Exposure to all seasonal weather conditions
  • Task requires an ability to comprehend lengthy and complex messages or paragraphs and to follow multistage and three step commands.
  • Valid Driver's License with an F,S,V or A passenger endorsement or a CDL license with a P endorsement. Required.
