Job Description
Uses computer-aided design to create plans of radiation treatment, calculates the values of necessary parameters to deliver the prescribed radiation dose and dose distributions, assists in complex treatment setups at CT simulation and/or at treatment, and assists in clinical instruction of therapists, therapy students, dosimetry students and residents in existing and new procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Obtains final plan approval from the attending radiation oncologist and submits the approved plan to a medical physicist for review.
  • Prepares all technical documentation required for treatment set up and record completion.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in department and professional education and training, participates in department meetings, peer review, and chart rounds, and assists section leader in training and implementation of new modalities and procedures.
  • Designs plans for radiation treatment by conferring with the attending radiation oncologist.
  • Supervises complex treatment set ups, supervises special case setups in the CT simulator.
  • Bills for calculations, plans, custom MLC, etc. per patient according to department and CCF policy and procedures.
  • Reviews patient treatment records for weekly checks.
  • Calculates the values of necessary parameters, e.g. monitor unit, gantry angle, MLC settings, to deliver the prescribed radiation dose and dose distributions and may need to calculate special dose measurements (e.g. TLD in-vivo measurements).
  • Participates in department quality assurance meetings, initiatives and implementation of initiatives, including general CCF quality improvement initiatives.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in science, mathematics or engineering, or equivalent from an accredited college or university and supplemental training leading toward the CMD certification by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board.

Certifications:

  • Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) certification by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board or equivalent preferred.
  • CMD certification or equivalent required within 48 months of hire.

Complexity of Work:

  • Ability to use sophisticated computer and software, analytical thinking, manual dexterity, social skills, professional integrity and commitment to teamwork.

Work Experience:

  • Completion of a well-regarded training program.
  • Knowledge of simulation processes, treatment planning paradigms such as forward planning and IMRT planning, brachytherapy planning, in-vivo dosimetric measurements, and verify and record systems.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires standing, sitting and walking for extended periods of time; must lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and the ability to participate in assisting patients on and off treatment couches.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
