Job Description

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ADVOCATE

The Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center (MIWRC) is a non-profit social and mental health
services organization committed to traditional ways of being and support of American Indian women
and their families.

Founded in 1984, MIWRC provides a broad range of programs designed to educate and empower Native
women and their families, and to inform and assist those who work providing services to the
community.

MIWRC is located in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, which has the third largest urban
American Indian population in the United States.

Programs are developed to reflect the needs of our families, and are tailored to address issues that
significantly affect their well-being, such as family services, affordable housing, chemical dependency,
mental health care, cultural resilience and healing, and other family and community issues.

SALARY: $50,000/annually, plus benefits

JOB SUMMARY: The Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center (MIWRC) is seeking a dynamic and
community-connected leader to coordinate and provide holistic services for victims of gender based
violence, including: domestic violence services and providing appropriate referrals external providers for
victims of violence, which services Native American/American Indian Women and their families.

The Domestic Violence Advocate is outward facing, results-oriented, high energy and inspiring. They will
provide prevention, intervention, healing support, and crime victim services advocacy to adult American
Indian women, American Indian youth, and Two Spirit/Native LGBTQ survivors of domestic violence.

NOTE: In this position, you will be confronted with crisis situations affecting the Native American
community. These may be people that are unhoused or live in extreme poverty, are dealing with
sexual violence and/or domestic violence, may be sex trafficked, current sex workers, or in
active addiction or receiving treatment. MIWRC encourages anyone applying for this position to

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with American Indian women and families
  • A minimum of a high school diploma. Preferred Bachelor’s degree or higher in human services or

related fields.

  • One to three years’ experience working in the American Indian Community.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a variety of projects and programs and able to analyze,
interpret and prepare data for internal and external use.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • CLIENT/RELATIVE SERVICES
• Provide assessment of needs, crisis intervention, case management, support advocacy
and one-to-one services, and other support groups assigned by supervisor.
  • Provide safety planning, referral for OFPs, harassment orders, shelter referral
emergency needs.
  • Collaborate and network with other organizations, including the local Police Record and
keep accurate and up-to-date client files and accurate group list.
  • Assist in recruitment and training of volunteers, interns, and plan and coordinate
schedules
  • Plan and provide public speaking to professional and community groups on
assault/abuse and victims’ rights.
