The Prince George's County Government Department of the Environment is seeking qualified applicants to fill an Dispatcher position, grade A10, within its Animal Shelter Customer Service Division.
About the Position:
The incumbent will be involved in all aspects of dispatching operations, receiving, recording and establishing priority calls; and is responsible for maintaining records and files of all dispatcher activities. The Dispatcher maintains a working knowledge of the County’s Animal Control Ordinance and advises citizens when needed.
This position is designated “essential” in accordance with DoE Instruction 110.4.

Examples of Work

What You'll Do:

  • Relay information to kennel staff regarding incoming animals.
  • Provide assistance to customer service reps in responding to complaints or calls for information
  • Perform other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general, occupational category and responsibility level associated with the employee's class of work.
  • Provide animal hospital locations to officers for injured animals.
  • Provide Center for Disease Control Numbers to officers in the field for animals to be tested for possible rabies exposures.
  • Update incoming dispatcher on the status of active calls, calls not dispatched, location of personnel, and unusual events or situations.
  • Respond to radio calls to Animal Services for assistance and information from all sources.
  • Assign calls to Animal Control Officers in appropriate areas and priorities based on established procedures.
  • Receives and transmits information on assigned radio channels.
  • Dispatch calls for service and other information to Animal Control Officers and staff.
  • Maintain records and files of all dispatcher activities on an appropriate log or computer system.
  • Receive and record information to be dispatched to personnel in the field from appropriate sources.

Qualifications

What You'll Need:

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
  • High school graduate.
  • Some clerical experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of the geography of Prince George's County and designation of inspection areas and personnel.
  • Ability to transmit oral messages clearly and accurately via radio and telephone.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of operating two-way radio transmitting and receiving equipment.

EXAMINATION: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be administered an online examination to demonstrate proficiency in administrative duties and computer software programs. Applicants must pass the online proficiency examination in order to be considered for this position.
DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Applicants will be selected from a temporary register of eligible candidates, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
ELIGIBILITY TO WORK:

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Some knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of operating two-way radio transmitting and receiving equipment.

  • Some knowledge of basic English and spelling.
