Job Description
The Director of Business Intelligence is responsible for providing tactical and strategic leadership, vision, project management, and planning for the team that serves the business reporting and analytics needs of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine (LKSOM). The Director will provide oversight of the day-to day-functions of the Business Intelligence Department, and work with leaders across the School to identify their business needs. Through analysis, planning, and executing strategy this position will enhance revenue, operational efficiencies and overall quality of the School’s education and research missions and administrative services while leading the effort to become a fully data-driven School.
Essential Functions:
  • Be a key player in leadership discussions, and create value by measuring and interpreting business strategies.
  • Provide training and mentorship for Business Intelligence Staff.
  • Collaborate with business leaders and end users to define requirements for new technology and reporting solutions to drive business results.
  • Provide actionable recommendations to capitalize on leadership insights; standardize common metrics and reporting.
  • Manage the development of the Business Intelligence dashboards and data analytics solutions using industry standard toolsets such as Tableau, Cognos or Power BI.
  • Manage budget and vendor products and services for BI systems and projects, including existing vendor relationships, regularly evaluating the effectiveness of paid resources, and identifying and acquiring new vendor accounts, products, or services.
  • Oversee the scheduling, development, and submission of reports to requisite governmental or other higher education organizations and/or governing bodies.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to discover opportunities to optimize business processes or enhance strategic decision-making through reporting and analytics. Implement tools and systems to make LKSOM data savvy.
  • Lead and participate in project working groups, workshops and meetings. Contribute to IT sprint planning sessions and project prioritization sessions (when applicable). Ensure key risks and issues are identified, documented, mitigated, and communicated to the appropriate stakeholders or business analyst in a timely manner.
  • Establish and execute a vision and strategic goals for BI systems and projects, including designing and implementing efficient and effective processes, and new BI technologies to meet the needs of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define business requirements, perform functional specification reviews, create test plans, and assist with testing coordination and signoffs.
  • Work with school leadership to semantically model the central concepts and relationships in their domain.
  • Serve as the primary expert on business intelligence and analytics. Develop and maintain a strategic program roadmap, project plans and milestones.
  • Manage and prioritize inbound requests; develop clearly defined deliverables and effectively manage team resources to fulfill those requests. Ensure and plan for system capacity for existing and new solutions.
  • Drive the adoption of new Business Intelligence solutions across the School by identifying findings and presenting recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Lead and mentor the LKSOM Business Intelligence team in a manner that ensures high-quality service to the LKSOM community.
  • Lead the effort to become a fully data-driven culture by ensuring that Business Intelligence is appropriately integrated at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine. Design and develop reports and analytical resources that serve the operational and planning needs of the School.

Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, Health Information Management or another analytical or quantitative field required.
Seven years of experience in business intelligence or data analytics, preferably in an academic/medical school environment. Prior experience managing business intelligence or data management teams strongly preferred. Master's Degree preferrede. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Ability to work in a cross functional, matrixed environment across multiple divisions and entities.
  • Ability to conduct quantitative research and present analytical studies in a fast-paced collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite software programs.
  • Willingness to travel, if needed.
  • Significant experience with Business Intelligence toolsets.
  • Ability to understand user reporting requirements and develop reporting/visual designs that meet the end-user needs and the ability to explain data to end-users.
  • Experience in participating in all stages of a project lifecycle, including planning, requirements gathering, analysis, designing, documentation, testing and rollout.
  • Significant experience with relational databases and data models.
  • Knowledge of Business Intelligence dashboard design concepts and best practices.
  • Proficient in SQL with the ability to query complex data sets within a relational database.

This position is assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote).
