A Day In The Life of a Director Of Maintenance


The position you are applying for is responsible for the direction and overall efficient operation of the FAA-approved AOC as required under FAA Part 119.65. You will be reporting directly to SVP Continuing Airworthiness you will be the Direct liaison with the assigned FAA inspectors at the designated Flight Standards District Office concerning all matters about maintenance operations of all aircraft on the FAA Approved and Operations Certificate. Also holding the position of Deputy Continuing Airworthiness, responsible for the management and oversight of the Technical Services, Maintenance Operations Centre (“MOC”), Engineering, Planning, Procurement, and Materials Department.


Essential Duties Of The Director Of Maintenance


  • Oversees the annual maintenance organization budget to support the operation and maintains effective communication within the process, business units, and suppliers.
  • Execution of the process and procedures as required under the maintenance portion of the FAA Approved Operations Specifications.
  • Responsible for notifying and adding or removing an aircraft from the FAA Approved Operations Certificate.
  • May be required to participate in internal investigations regarding maintenance-related accidents and serious incidents.
  • Reviews each department’s training standards to ensure they will meet the requirements established by the SVP Continuing Airworthiness.
  • Reviews the findings of each department’s compliance audits and ensure all results are resolved within the timeframe agreed with Compliance Department.
  • 135.411, and Coordination with the Chief Inspector to support maintenance operations, audit findings, and vendor approvals.
  • The accepted General Operations Manual (“GOM”) and accepted General Maintenance Manual (“GMM”) per the FAA OPS SPEC.
  • Ensures all documents are filled completely and correctly and kept for the period required by FAA and internal company guidelines.
  • Serves as a member of the Safety Committee and promotes Safety Management Systems (SMS).
  • Ensure aircraft are maintained in a manner supportive of enhancing aircraft reliability.
  • Execution of FAA Approved Aircraft Inspection Program (“AAIP”) per FAR Part 135.419 and the Aircraft Maintenance Inspection Program (“AMP”) per FAR Part 91.409.
  • Works with Human Resources to recruit qualified members for the maintenance organization, create career paths for each senior member, and provide the support and mentoring necessary for each senior team member to attain the agreed goals.
  • Leads and is responsible for the implementation of continuous improvement initiatives as recommended by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Procurement Department staff and functions for the FAA-approved aircraft services and material needed for aircraft maintenance and repair, and Material Department staff and procedures related to the company-owned inventory and the logistics of storing, receiving, and issuing material throughout the system, and Ensuring all maintenance department staff are trained per the approved annual training plans.
  • MOC staff and functions as required under the FAA Approved Operations Certificate,
  • Ensures the office of the Deputy Continuing Airworthiness / DOM functions provides the necessary leadership to run the maintenance department effectively and efficiently.
  • Engineering staff and functions in support of aircraft maintenance programs, aircraft configuration control, document control, and AD Note compliance.
  • Maintain Continuous Airworthiness Maintenance Program (“CAMP”) per FAR Part
  • Ensures the timely execution of the CASS program as described in the GMM
  • Develop and maintain a collaborative work environment within the maintenance organization.
  • Daily responsibility and oversight for the Technical Services Department staff and functions as related to the addition and removal of aircraft from the FAA Approved Operations Certificate.
  • Planning Department staff and functions to support unscheduled and scheduled maintenance promptly and within the appropriate maintenance schedule.


Required Skills, Qualifications, And Experience


  • Ideally holds AI and A&P licenses (or equivalent) with type training on one or more of the aircraft types in operation and has extensive experience as a DOM for a large operation.
  • Works well under pressure, guiding their team and liaising with senior management and regulatory authorities.
  • Possess a solid understanding of the following concerning the certificate holder's operation:
  • Extensive knowledge of aircraft FAA, EASA, and international regulations.
  • 14 CFR Chapter I (Federal Aviation Regulations)
  • Proven experience in creating and leading successful teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership in creating a highly effective team with an efficient department structure, defining and implementing effective processes, and selecting and mentoring staff to create a highly successful organization.
  • Clear thinker adept at understanding complex issues and identifying practical solutions
  • Aviation safety standards and safe operating practices
  • Effective communicator.
  • All appropriate maintenance and airworthiness requirements, including Parts 1, 21, 43, 91, 135, and 145, applicable to the position
  • The certificate holder's operations specifications and manuals required by 135.21
