Director Of Inventory


What Will You Do?


The Director of Inventory is a key senior management role that works across multiple locations providing continuous direction, guidance and business enhancement recommendations to all levels of Ashley management. This position is responsible for budget development and adherence, X to Y project direction, inventory controls, government, legal and audit compliance and representation. This role works directly with other Ashley departments on system development and improvements to Bills of Material, Labor routings, inventory controls and product costing. This position must maintain the integrity of the operational accounting aspects of the financial statements such as inventory, standard cost of sales, operating expenses. This position is responsible successful guidance and development of a large team of professional staff members. The Director Operational Finance is a business partner in Operations Management with the mission of business success and performance excellence necessary to keep Ashley the number one name in the Furniture Industry.


  • Communicate company and departmental issues and goals and facilitate employee growth and development through weekly team meetings, regular individual employee meetings, coaching, training, and company-offered learning opportunities.
  • Audit, maintain and ensure employee time-keeping and absentee records are accurate.
  • Manage the preparation of operational annual budgets and forecast updates on a divisional, facility and departmental basis for all assigned sites.
  • Responsible for the review and improvement of inventory variances related to cycle count accuracy and material yield.
  • Maintain divisional, facility and departmental metrics and facilitate on-going review and discussion to ensure measures change as required by changes in business.
  • Make employment decisions and/or recommendations on hiring, improvement plans, transfers, promotions, corrective actions, terminations, pay adjustments, etc.
  • Demonstrate the Company’s Core and Growth Values in the performance of all job functions.
  • Provide reports and analysis requested by the Financing and Warehousing Executives.
  • Conduct and review Inventory analysis with Warehousing, and Operations management teams.
  • Prepare and conduct monthly locational inventory reviews for all manufacturing plants and warehouses. Reviews include re-cap of results and identification of improvement projects designed to keep all assigned locations on-track with forecast and budget.
  • Extensive travel is required with this position including all assigned manufacturing facilities located within the United States and globally. All plant visits should include time in production and warehousing to identify wastes and work with management to implement solutions.
  • Manage employee performance and assist employees in making improvements to their performance through coaching, mentoring and administering performance reviews. Recommend, plan and/or implement employee training and skill development activities.
  • Manage resources to optimize equipment, facilities, employees, methods and materials.
  • Coordinate and manage the work of employees by directing members of the team to meet the area’s goals. Audit regularly to ensure standard operating procedures are being adhered to.
  • Responsible for Inventory accounting areas of compliance including external audit, internal audit, legal and governmental requests. Key representative for the company related to tax incentives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to coordinate efforts to improve Inventory Accounting systems including Inventory management dashboards, and Inventory data collection systems.
  • Oversee and audit the data collection systems to ensure employees are accurately paid in accordance with Company policies. Work directly with management teams in all manufacturing and warehouse sites to implement controls to maintain accurate inventory records and control invenory variances.
  • Hold directors accountable to budgets, X to Y projects and Inventory variance reductions. Weekly update meetings held with all assigned locations to review progress and implement action plans to keep projects on-track.


What Do You Need?


  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting, Required
  • Respond professionally in situations with difficult employee/vendor/customer issues or inquiries
  • Working knowledge of Continuous Improvement
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficient computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite, internet
  • Work independently as well as in a team environment
  • 10 years’ experience in a cost or Inventory management role, Required
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Handle multiple projects simultaneously within established time constraints
  • Financial Accounting
  • GAAP – Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Display empathy, understanding and patience with employees and external customers
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Simultaneously manage multiple tasks in various facilities
  • Evaluating and prioritizing process improvement initiatives
  • CPA or CMA, Preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Cost Accounting
  • Perform under strong demands in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines
