The Westfield Area YMCA has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, mission driven candidate to join our team! Under the direction of the VP of Operations, the Director of Health & Wellness is responsible for the administration, supervision and operation of the Health & Wellness Department. Oversees strength trainers, fitness attendants, personal trainers, group fitness instructors, wellness supervisors, and the staff managing virtual exercise programming. Ensures cleanliness and safety within fitness areas along with leading the purchase of new exercise equipment. Promotes the YMCA, has a people-oriented approach to service delivery and demonstrates and maintains an enthusiastic and positive attitude about their role at all times. The Director of Health & Wellness must also demonstrate a commitment to the YMCA’s four Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility and must exemplify that member service is as an equal a part of any position in the “YMCA” as the technical aspects of each position.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervise strength trainers, personal trainers, fitness attendants, and group fitness instructors who assist members with questions, exercises, etc.
  • Keep the Vice President of Operations informed of parent, participant and staff/volunteer concerns and occurrences.
  • Ensure tracking and up to date payment of personal training sessions.
  • Ensure cleanliness of the fitness centers and respond timely and appropriately to comments and concerns of members.
  • Oversee group fitness department and scheduling including offsite fitness programs.
  • Ensure high quality Health & Wellness programs are delivered.
  • Oversee staffing to deliver quality virtual exercise programming via zoom.
  • Work with all staff to ensure the delivery of safe exercise programming.
  • Oversee the Active Older Adult (AOA) program.
  • Oversee the fitness orientation program for members.
  • Keep the work order system up to date with any repairs, status updates, etc.
  • Coordinate the repair of exercise equipment with the facilities department and fitness companies.
  • Coordinate annual fitness equipment purchases for all facilities and locations.
  • Evaluate the needs of potential personal training clients and recommend an appropriate trainer for them.
  • Interview, hire and train all direct reports.
  • Ensure strength trainer coverage during all operating hours. Adjust staff schedule as needed during peak times.
  • Conduct personal training sessions and/or teach classes as needed.
  • Keep online class schedules updated and members informed of any changes, additions, cancellations, etc.

Other Programs:

  • Assist the member services department with tours or other members’ needs.
  • Assist by providing staffing for the Devilfish Dryland Program.
  • Lead or assist with fitness challenges to drive member engagement and retention.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $55 - $65K based on experience, education, certifications and qualifications
Requirements:
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree preferably in Physical Education, Recreation Management or Exercise Science with a minimum of 3 years’ experience within the Health and Wellness field.
  • Must possess and maintain the certification of personal trainer by a nationally recognized organization, or become certified in this area within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be able to conduct rigorous exercise classes and lift weight equipment. Excellent organizational, time management skills, creativity, initiative, flexibility and strong communication skills are also essential.
  • Must possess, maintain and renew ASHI Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers and Professional Rescuers (CPR & AED), Basic First Aid or equivalent and Emergency Oxygen Administration within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be able to assist in the training, directing and supervision of all health and wellness staff with regard to various fitness activities, strength training equipment management and its theories. The Director will be responsible for annual equipment purchases and the timely repair or any malfunctioning equipment.
  • Must have the knowledge required for the management of facilities, equipment, resources, programs, trainings, risk management, quality assurance, staff and schedules for the Health & Wellness Department.
