Job Description

Overview

Manages the day-to-day operations for facilities and property maintenance at the Zoo, Zoombezi Bay and Safari Golf Club.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees all building and site maintenance operations, and/or associated staff inclusive of, budget, contracts, repairs, renovations, maintenance of mechanical, electrical, waste management and sustainability equipment.
  • Full oversight and management of internal CMMS system, responsible for prioritizing work orders, distributing to teams for completion, monitoring progress and reporting on KPI’s to leadership.
  • Works with other departments to coordinate projects where Zoo is acting as general contractor and is using outside subcontractors and its own staff for project construction.
  • Manages and directs the activities of assigned or collaborating staff which includes electrical, mechanical, carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, landscape, grounds, rides and custodial teams.
  • Ensures success of Wildlights light show.
  • Attends daily/weekly/monthly meetings as required.
  • Receives and prioritizes work orders, makes decisions on work performed in-house and work to be contracted out.
  • Utilizing internal CMMS system, responsible for development of preventative maintenance schedules and programs in conjunction with department managers, monitors progress and reports on KPI’s to leadership.
  • Acts as Director On Duty as assigned by the COO.
  • Develops and manages the department budget, reviews and submits invoices for payment, tracks expenses ensuring the department remains within approved budgets.
  • Assures safety of self, the collection, staff and visitors through proper training and techniques around the animals, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Participates in the planning and assists in the value engineering of Capitol Improvement Projects.
  • Prepares and approves requisitions for materials and services.
  • Supervises or performs field inspection of contracted construction projects.
  • Works with Purchasing to establish required inventory levels for supplies and materials.
  • Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club and The Wilds.
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Plans, assigns, and reviews the work of direct reports, conducts performance reviews, provides and identifies training and development opportunities, recommends corrective actions when appropriate and interviews/recommends candidates for hire and/or internal promotion or transfer.
  • Develops preventative maintenance schedules and programs.

Qualifications

  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by interacting with guests positively and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into daily work and maintenance utilization.
  • Possession of a valid Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of building maintenance/construction related experience required.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Ability to prioritize work and to oversee multiple projects simultaneously, with a track record of managing capital projects including planning, implementation, and budget management.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required.
  • Ability to lead collectively, considering the needs of internal and external stakeholders and the organization’s mission, vision and values.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
  • Ability to solve complex problems in a strategic and tactical manner, while exercising sound judgement and decision-making and proactively addresses issues in an effective and timely manner.
  • Strong supervisory skills and minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience required.
  • Ability to provide leadership, vision and management to the facilities team in a manner that motivates team members to do their best work, supports staff development, recognizes excellence and promotes a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office suite required with knowledge of AutoCad and other job-related computer programs, inclusive of CMMS systems.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to present complex information in a manner that builds consensus and is clear to the everyday person.
  • B.S. in related field such as Mechanical/Electrical/Structural/Civil Engineering, Construction Management or Architecture desirable.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and follow-up treatment required.
