Position Summary
To oversee the staff and all operations of the Biomedical Engineering Department. The Director is responsible and accountable for the overall operations of the department including the development of department goals and objectives that are consistent with the hospital mission, the management of personnel, preparing/monitoring of and accountability for the department budgets.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- Ensures the proper installation, maintenance, inspection, testing, and repairs of medical equipment according to the requirements State of New York, County of Westchester, NYS and County Health Departments, NFPA, the Joint Commission, and all other authorities having jurisdiction.
- Participates in the responsibility for the management of FTE component of staffing budgets
- Assures that employee competency and education requirements are satisfied as per hospital policy.
- As required, participates in the Performance Improvement Program as defined by the organization.
- Is responsible for participation in committees, task forces and projects as appropriate.
- Assures the provision of a safe employee/patient environment.
- Maintains knowledge related to the operations of overall hospital operations.
- Works collaboratively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team and promotes the team concept within their department and hospital wide.
- Promotes a positive and professional image and are a role model, coach, mentor and resource for staff and peers.
- Assumes and maintains 24 hour responsibility for the department
- Formulates and recommends policies and procedures for improving Biomedical Engineering operations.
- Establishes and enforces preventative maintenance schedules.
- Directs the efforts of the Biomedical Engineering staff.
- Overseas the Sr BMET/BMET2 operations and assignments
- Manage and implement a training program for the Biomedical Engineering Staff.
- Inspects medical equipment on a regular basis in accordance with the manufacture’s guidelines.
- Monitors all purchase orders for the Biomedical Engineering Department
- Aids in overseeing the work of contractor that perform services on medical equipment.
- Evaluates and monitors cost and vendors utilized by the department.
- Develops and submits departmental goals and objectives as required by the Division Administrator.
- Interviews, hires, evaluates, counsels and terminates employees as per hospital policy.
- Schedules staff based on budgeted staffing plan and department needs.
- Develops and submits operating and capital budgets and reports variances as required to the Division Administrator.
- Attends managerial meetings as required and participates in specific committees and projects as requested.
- Conducts monthly staff meetings to update staff and/or address department issues and records meeting minutes
- Submits all other work reports as required/requested by the Division Administrator.
- Monitors and implements contracts for outside services if required.
- Establish protocols, schedules and documentation for preventive maintenance for all medical equipment.
- Plans, schedules and supervised maintenance and repairs.
- Assigns prescheduled and emergency work to mechanics personnel in accordance with departmental workload.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in specialized related field preferred
- Working knowledge of medical equipment and high technical skills
- Working knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Office and data base software programs
- Previous management/ leadership experience or minimum of 7 years relevant experience
- Clinical knowledge of medical equipment.

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment
- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
- Must be able to constantly position self in order to perform job duties over an extended of time.
- Must be physically capable of making prescribed inspections and repairs of the plant, and be able to visually and audibly determine any discrepancies.
- Must be able to perform job duties when exposed to high level of noise.
- Must be able to perform snow/ice removal and work in all outdoor weather conditions.
- Able to work from sketches and blueprints.
- Must be able to transport heavy objects up to 50 lbs
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods,
- Able to work well with department staff and other hospital staff.
- Able to concentrate for extended periods of time.
- Able to communicate via telephone, fax machine, computer, internet, etc
- Have visual perception needed to comprehend color-coded wiring systems.
- Must have physical dexterity, coordination and stamina to perform the inspections, which involves ascend/descend ladders, using and operating the tools and machinery to perform job duties.
- Able to communicate effectively with all hospital departments and personnel.
