The Director of Athletics responsible for the overall administration, vision, leadership and management of the intercollegiate athletics program including: the quality and integrity of the athletic programs; academic achievement; management of fiscal and human resources; fundraising; program promotion and advancement; and the development, operation of athletic facilities. The Director will provide overall vision, planning and strategic direction of the Athletics program. The Director of Athletics is under the supervision of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

The Director of Athletics will develop, and administer a highly competitive athletics program, consistent with the student-athlete philosophy of NAIA athletics, which generates College and community enthusiasm and support. Become competitive at the conference, regional and national levels. Oversee all administrative, fundraising, budget and coaching activities within the program.
The Director of Athletics is also responsible for actively promoting the University and fundraising for the athletics programs and establishing and nurturing collegial relationships with both internal and external constituents. This includes extensive contact with the Fisk University students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Also interacts with the community and other external stakeholders.
Represents the university as its primary spokesperson for the intercollegiate athletics program; Oversees public relations with faculty, staff, students, alumni, sports media, and the general public.
Works with the Vice President of Student Affairs and Office of University Relations to develop and implement public relations policies and objectives.
Accepts public speaking engagements to publicize department philosophies and objectives. Travels extensively throughout the continental United States in order to support athletic teams, fundraise and other University related business. Submits recommendations and supporting documentation to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and President, as necessary, to make decisions regarding goals, academics, capital expansion, staffing, budget appropriations, and other aspects of intercollegiate athletics; implements and communicates directives, including maintenance and control.
Establishes policies and procedures to ensure compliance with National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), conference, and university rules and regulations. Coordinates and supervises all sports programs, working directly with Head Coaches; supervises the administration of all other varsity programs through the Athletics Administration Team.
Serves as primary Budget Officer. Oversees all internal financial and administrative operation budget guidelines and approves final submission for each area; monitors conformance to established budget.
  • Coordinates scheduling for sports events involving conference participation of revenue contracts.
  • Negotiates and administers contracts concerning radio and television (network, cable, and internet) coverage of athletic events; serves as the university's primary public relations liaison for intercollegiate sports.
  • Other related duties as appropriately assigned. There will be an administrative duty officially assigned to the position.
  • Spearheads fundraising efforts to provide for scholarships, facilities, and equipment. Supervises marketing and promotions activities through the Assistant Athletics Director for Development; oversees the development of sales strategies to maximize revenue from promotional items.
  • Develops long-term plans to determine need for and feasibility of constructing or upgrading athletic facilities.
  • Supervises fund development through the Bulldogs Athletics Club and Office of Institutional Advancement; may personally secure gifts or establish endowment funds by cultivating the interest of corporations, individuals, foundations, or associations.
  • Complies with all NAIA rules and regulations, and acknowledges this compliance as part of an annual evaluation process.
  • Remains in full compliance with NAIA, University, and Conference rules.
Secondary Functions
The Director of Athletics serves on several University Standing Committee's which include but not limited to: President's Senior Leadership Team, Budget, Homecoming, Hall of Fame and various youth organizations within the community. Also serves as liaison to Bulldog Athletics Club. Also serves other appointments as directed by the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Conduct program in an ethically responsible manner so as to ensure the safety of the student athlete.
Create an appropriate academic culture for team members and provide adequate academic monitoring, support and counseling for student-athletes.
Must attend compliance workshop.
High level of communication skills, both written and oral.
Serve on the Hall-of-Fame Committee
Participate in departmental meetings and activities including serving on committees Represent Fisk University at professional meetings, alumni gatherings, campus activities and civic affairs.
Encourage and administer community service activities to benefit both the on-campus and off-campus communities.
Maintain relationships with parents, alumni, friends of the program, and others toward the positive image and promotion of the program
Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
Specific Job Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Demonstrated commitment to excellence;
Knowledge of basic principles of supervision, management and athletic administration.
Knowledge of basic athletic marketing, promotions and fund raising techniques.
Knowledge of effective coaching principles and techniques.
Knowledge of NAIA rules and regulations and university policies and procedures. Ability to prepare and manage athletics budgets in compliance with university, Fisk University Board of Trustees and NAIA policy.
Ability to effectively listen, work and communicate with all levels of employees and students
Ability to effectively plan for and manage athletic events, parking and ticket sales. Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
Knowledge and understanding of the application of NAIA Bylaw's as they pertain to the eligibility of student-athletes and the athletic programs.
Ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the university, the respective conference and the NAIA.
Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment as needed.
Ability to attend seminars, meetings and other professional development opportunities at or away from Fisk University.
Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions, and other outcomes.
Ability to apply budgeting and fiscal planning techniques within financial constraints. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively - orally, by phone, in person, and in writing. Ability to represent the department and University in a friendly, courteous and professional manner.
Ability to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner.
Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment. Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to handle and maintain confidential information.
Organizational Responsibility
The Director of Athletics will oversee including Administrative Staff, Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Support Staff, Student Coaches and Work Study Students in the Department of Athletics (See Organizational Chart).
Annual performance evaluations will be conducted and filed. Recommendations, both to hire or fire, from the Director of Athletics may be forwarded to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management for approval. Other related duties as appropriately assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
Experience
Accredited Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree preferred.
The position requires a minimum of five-seven years of progressively responsible professional experience as a coach and/or administrator in intercollegiate athletics.
Licenses Or Certificates
CPR, First Aid & AED.
Valid driver's license is required.
