Job Description
General Statement of Duties


Located just 15 miles north of Boston, Salem State University is one of the largest state universities in Massachusetts, and an important partner in the economic, cultural and intellectual vitality of the greater Boston region. The admissions department seeks a seasoned director to develop and administer appropriate strategies to meet enrollment goals set by university leadership. As both a strategic leader and hands-on manager, the director will implement an enrollment and recruitment strategy that aligns with shifting demographics to build a solid pipeline of new students to the university. The director plans and executes all aspects of the undergraduate recruitment functions and events, as well as hires, trains, and mentors the admissions counselors. The director of admissions serves as a member of a dynamic enrollment management team and works closely with the operations unit to support other enrollment conversion activities.


Duties And Responsibilities


  • Demonstrate sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles.
  • Perform all supervisory functions of the admissions staff, including hiring, training and evaluation. Identify and assess future and current training needs for staff by providing opportunities for staff development.
  • Interacts with college Deans, department chairs, and other campus partners on matters relating to undergraduate recruitment and admissions, including yield communications, events, and activities.
  • Serves as a role model and mentor for students as appropriate.
  • Serve on internal and external committees as needed including the enrollment management team.
  • Develop and execute a student recruitment plan to meet the enrollment goals of the university; includes transfer and freshmen, international, evening and day students.
  • Participate in designing and administering assessment activities to foster continuous improvement and accountability related to areas of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with EM operations to ensure best practices and innovative techniques are part of the application review process.
  • Assist the AVP with the development of incoming enrollment projections.
  • Oversee and lead all undergraduate admissions activities.
  • Manage the implementation of all student administration systems relative to the admissions process.
  • Coordinate with Marketing and Creative Services in the promotion of the University, including the development of electronic and print materials and social and digital media strategies.
  • Represent Salem State at high school visits, career nights, open houses, accepted students' days, transfer fairs, and other on and off campus events related to college admissions.
  • Responsible for the strategic development, implementation, tracking, and evaluation of student recruitment with the goal of increasing application growth and yield to meet targeted enrollment goals.
  • Manage the undergraduate admissions budget.
  • Maintain knowledge and application of best practices for undergraduate recruitment and admissions for Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI, and Multicultural Serving Institutions (MSI).
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to students, faculty, and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Responsible for the management and execution of all on campus admissions events and yield activities.
  • Oversee the evaluation of applications and develop strategies to ensure equitable policies and processes are followed as well as timely review.


Qualifications


Required Qualifications:


  • Strong knowledge of the principles, practices and trends in the recruitment and enrollment of new students
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Broad-based knowledge of technology including analytical tools, systems
  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems such as Ellucian Banner CRM, Target X, Salesforce, or a similar system
  • Minimum of five years' experience in high-volume admissions environment including outreach, recruitment, campus tours, market-based efforts
  • Must be willing to travel extensively, have access to a vehicle, and work nights and weekends.
  • Ability to track admissions metrics and use data to make informed decisions to meet new enrollment targets


Preferred Qualifications


  • 5 to 10 years of experience in a higher education/admissions environment
  • Master's degree strongly preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required
  • A bility to work effectively with professional, classified, and student personnel

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 5-10 pounds.


This is a hybrid position with on site, in person responsibilities which requires the willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends and travel.
