Job Description

Director, Asylum Seeker & Homeless Shelter Services

New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit faith-based federation of faith communities, human services providers and charitable organizations who work in partnership to provide disaster readiness, response, and recovery services to New York City. Our affiliate, the NYC Emergency Shelter Network (ESN) coordinates and builds the capacity of congregation-based street homeless emergency shelter services and advocacy across 38 shelters in all five boroughs and is now expanding its programming to Asylum-Seeker shelters.

Reporting to NYDIS’ Executive Director & CEO, the Director will administer the day-to-day operations of all shelter services – primarily for asylum seeker sheltering and support programing. Asylum Seeker shelters will provide cultural and language competent services for up to 19 guests at 50 shelters across all five boroughs following the NYC Stabilization Bed model – as well as strategic support to 38 volunteer run emergency respite bed shelters This includes oversight of a $38M annual budget and managing a team of 17 staff – providing outreach, volunteer management, shelter staff training and shelter oversight with both finance and office support.

Duties include:
  • On-call 24/7/365 for program related emergencies – with back-up from other senior staff.
  • Work with NYDIS’ finance team to manage subcontractor and contract billing and invoicing under internal financial controls and procedures to ensure compliance with contracts and all program requirements;
  • Provide oversight of Sheltering Placement Manager(s) to provide daily, including weekends, detailed intake and shelter placement or exit management for all asylee guests moving in and out of our shelters;
  • Collaborate with stakeholder advisory committee, subcontractors, outreach managers, and vendor and city inspectors who will recruit, inspect, provision and subcontract 50 shelter sites.
  • Direct a team of Shelter Operations Managers, to provide healthy and safe environments for guests available seven days a week from approximately 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM
  • Establish a high-profile presence as an advocate for both asylees, immigrants, and street homeless shelter services and sector challenges. Including public speaking and social media;
  • Coordinate day-to-day program objectives and outcomes with government and non-profits stakeholders;
  • In collaboration with NYDIS’ Executive Staff, the Director will implement and manage a comprehensive asylee sheltering program including our NYC funded contract and all compliance, staff recruiting, training, programing, sub-contractor operations of shelter sites, training of NYDIS and shelter site staff, volunteer management, shelter logistics support with our warehouse team, and high-profile sector advocacy;
Qualifications include:
  • A leader who embraces and implements diversity, equity and inclusion best practices
  • Familiarity with basic religious literacy & competency
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office, databases, internet & social media use;
  • 2-4 years’ experience inspiring, managing and leading direct service staff teams;
  • Experience working with NYC congregations and grass roots advocates preferred.
  • 2-4 years’ experience working with asylee, immigrant and/or homeless populations is required;
  • Verbal and written fluency in Spanish preferred;
  • Exceptionally well organized and detail oriented;
  • Government contract management and reporting experience in programs with a $20M+ budget.
  • Creative problem solver with the ability to work collaboratively with staff;
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, in person and on the phone;
Education and/or Experience:
  • College degree or equivalent experience required. A graduate degree preferred.

Salary range, $160,000-$170,000, commensurate with experience – with excellent benefits.
